On a whim, she’s agreed to write a play for part of the White Sands Hotel’s summer stock season, but Anne is forced to admit that the play is nothing more than a way to take her mind off the troublesome recent events in her life. When a long-hidden secret is discovered under the floorboards at Green Gables, it provides a distraction of its own. As Anne struggles to complete the play, she delves into long-buried memories, reliving the troubled years before she arrived as an orphan at the Cuthberts’ farmhouse. Over the course of one remarkable summer, Anne Shirley discovers the truth about her parents, the origins of her quest for "kindred spirits," and the roots of her brilliant, magical imagination"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo. Montgomery poems are included, this volume issued the same year as The Watchman and Other Poems. Photo, brief bio and review of each poet followed by a sampling. Item Description: Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1935, 1935. Book Condition: near fine. 1st Canadian Edition. 338pp. Octavo. Illustrated dust jacket over publisher's light green cloth with titles in silver to spine and front board. Unclipped jacket. Signed "Yours Cordially, L. M. Montgomery" to ffep with additional signature, dated 1939 "Nancy Baker at "Green Gables". Illustrated frontis; interior textblock clean and tight. A wonderful signed Canadian first of "Mistress Pat" in jacket, signed "Yours cordially, L. M. Montgomery". Published simultaneously with the Frederick Stokes edition in the United States. Montgomery and Stokes argued over the title of the novel; she wanted "The Chatelaine of Silver Bush" but gave up in frustration and allowed the publishers to name it. The novel was written in a particularly dark period of Montgomery's life, however her inner turmoil does not appear evident in her character. Scarce in jacket and rare also signed. Also it would appear the previous owner, Nancy Baker, bought and/or got the book signed at Green Gables on August 11th, 1939. Lechowick 113. Russell 546. See Editions and Impressions. Item Description: McClelland, Goodchild & Stewart, Toronto, 1916. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. xii, 159 pp. 8vo. Green cloth. Signed by Montgomery with her rare cat signature. Bookplate from the library of George Ross Roy. Untrimmed. Library markings from the University of Montreal. Spine label and rear paste-down envelope removed. Very small spine gap between signatures 3 & 4 (p. 49) and 6 & 7 (p. 97). Among the rarest of Montgomery titles, the author's cat signature is certainly her hardest to find. It is beautifully situated here. While the influence of Robert Burns and her Scottish heritage on her writing is well documented, this copy of Montgomery's poetry title connects her to Ross, a scholar of Scottish literature and lore. As Ross attended the University of Montreal, the library from which this copy hails, it is possible he bought it during his education there in the 1950's, which would correspond with the style of bookplate used. Before specializing in Scottish literature, Roy focused for some time on Canadian literature, and so his interest in this volume plays a role his scholarly development. Montgomery visited Montreal in 1917 and could have signed this copy during that trip. Bookseller Inventory # 3504
