First printing of this edition. Fine / Fine. Marie-Madeleine Pioche de la Vergne, Comtesse de Lafayette (1634-92), wrote La princesse de Cleve, considered by many to be the first French psychological novel, in 1678. The novel appears here, together with La princesse de Montpensier (1662), Zaide (1670-71), and a short story, La comtesse de Tende (first published in 1724). The introduction by Magne occupies 31 pp. and he provides a short bibliography (4 pp.). There are notes at the back (21 pp.). Bookseller Inventory # 4155
