About this Item: Regency Publications/Daya Publishing House, 2002. Softcover. Condition: New. Shobhan Lamare`s Poems are written in what may be called the confessional mode. There is always in the poem a tussel between the individuality and the spirit. The Images used in the poems are shadowy, ethereal as the poets declares himself to be "A rebel and a lover". As the poet draws himself into a Spiritual experience, the other desires are also very real, filling him into a condition of remorse. If he is "Burdened by the weight of the cross" he is also waiting to write "An epitaph for someone!" The images used in the poems are always in a state and condition of the flux; calling for esoteric layers, waiting to be discovered, unravelled and rediscovered. This hidden complexity imbues them with Philosophical realities: hope, despair and joy abundance. Metaphorical realities are truths, labyrynthine and the poet is at Times desperately, clinging to such existential "truths". The possibilities "For a Soul to cry" juxtaposes itself with "Those open but empty spaces". The poems have a meditative quality, one of introspection sufferings, but at the same time possess the longings for joy. The twin realities of darkness and light, Myth and reality, permeate these poems and climax them into "A Stigma, Perhaps." Lamare`s poems are not without a lyrical sense. Sometimes though breaking into direct, if not bland statements. They are poems of hope, poems of despair, yet not led into categorizations of moral trappings, The good and bad dichtomies are ever present in the form of poetic outpourings. They are of course not without their blemishes, but what is true of them is that they speak very directly from the heart. They lie tantalizingly poised "on the edge of dreams". Surreality, dreamlike qualities are some of the hallmarks of his poetry. His Poetry is at times a struggle between grotesquerie and undefined light like "The tender spirit walking over, destroying unwanted thoughts". It is groping will, this Hiatus between cataclysmic moment and the routine matters which makes these poems, at least the better ones. Broad statements of deeply troubled Experiences such as that of summer "dying", where Death is understood in terms of symbol and metaphor, a poetic belief construed in terms of aridity, suffering and hopelessness. "Just another day" a simple statement like this encompasses a mood and fatalistic conviction. If "The colours becoming brighter" metamorphoses into there permanence is the utopian hope of a promised world. Printed Pages: 75. Seller Inventory # 59474

About this Item: Regency. Hardbound. Condition: As New. Contents : Foreword. Preface. Glossary. 1. Resistance movements in British India-an overview. 2. Historical background of jaintia's relations with the British. 3. The origins of the resistance. 4. The course and military campaigns. 5. The aftermath of resistance. 6. Conclusion. Appendix I. Home public proceedings, 19 May, 1860. II. The friend of India, 6 February, 1862. III. The Englishman, 19 February, 1862. IV. Proceedings in the case of oookiang Nongba charged with rebellion. Bibliography. "In January 1860, the Jaintias, concerned that the British Indian Government had imposed a house tax on them, the collection of which had started some months earlier, and further aggravated by the restrictions on the local customs, rose in resistance to the imperial power. What started as a localised upheaval soon spread over the entire Jaintia Hills. Suppressed in a few months the British were caught unaware when the Jaintias rose in resistance again in 1862. It was another two years and more before the "little war" as it was called, was finally suppressed. "This is the first detailed study on what was perhaps the most serious resistance to British rule in North-East India after 1857. The author has made judicious use of Jaintia oral history, weaving these sources with archival and published references. The origins of the uprising, its nature and course of military operations are presented in detail but without losing focus on the central issue of a tribal resistance offered to alien rule. "The book should be useful for those interested in the study of resistance movements, British imperialism 153 pp. Seller Inventory # 37856
