About this Item: Museum of New Mexico Press, 1982. Trade Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. Wesche, Alice - Drawings (illustrator). Third Printing. 24 Un-numbered pages. Stapled booklet illustrated with drawings on most pages. The materials, tools, and techniques of pottery making described here are those in use in the pueblos of New Mexico today. They do not differ greatly from those used by prehistoric potters of five centuries or more ago. It is true that commercial paints are sometimes used, and there are records of the use of commercially prepared clay by Indian potters. Water color brushes, paring knives, tin cans, scrap iron and other products and by-products of civilization have found their way into the equipment inventory of the Pueblo potter. There are even records of attempts to fire pottery in the oven of the kitchen stove. But for the most part the basic clay is still mined, prepared, molded, decorated and fired in the traditional fashion. The Pueblo potter of the Southwest has withstood the impact of a nontraditional culture well, and world art is all the richer for it. The earliest potters of the Southwest were the Mogollon Indians. They lived in New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico. Ancestors of the Mogollon are credited with being the first agriculturists of the Southwest over 4,000 years ago. By 300 B.C. these Indians were living in semi-underground dwellings, making crudely formed clay vessels, and growing corn, beans, and squash. Agriculture and pottery making entered from Mesoamerica and both of these industries spread northward in the early years of the Christian era to the Indians of the Four Corners area now identified as the Anasazi. New World Indians never developed the potter's wheel. With minor exceptions, the Pueblo pottery you see today is made as it has been for perhaps 2,000 years using coil or ring Size: 5 1/2" X 8 1/4".
