Laplace is remembered as one of the greatest scientists of all time. Sometimes referred to as the French Newton or Newton of France, he possessed a phenomenal natural mathematical faculty superior to that of any of his contemporaries. Laplace also came close to propounding the concept of the black hole. He suggested that there could be massive stars whose gravity is so great that not even light could escape from their surface. Item Description: Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1785. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of the first appearance of "Laplace's equation". "In 1777 Lagrange devoted a short paper to some of the properties of potential functions, including an application to the question of replacing a system of bodies by the centre of mass of the system for the purposes of calculating their motions. It was Laplace, however, who made extensive use of the potential function in his studies of the attractions of spheroids and in his Mecanique Celeste. It was primarily through this work that knowledge of the potential function as a tool in the solution of partial differential equations became widespread. In his 1785 paper "Theorie des attractions des Spheroides & de la figure des Planetes" Laplace introduced the potential function (without even a passing reference to Lagrange) and showed that it satisfies what we now call Laplace's equation" (Jahnke, History of Analysis). "In retrospect, the most interesting feature of the entire treatise is bound to be the emergence of the concept of what is now called potential, although that name was not given to the sum or integral of the action of the elements of an attracting body upon an external point until 1828, when George Green adopted Poisson’s application of the expression for it to electrostatic and magnetic effects” (DSB). The present volume also contains eight memoirs by Lavoisier: 1- "Mémoire sur un Moyen d'augmenter considérablement l'action du Feu & de la Chaleur, dans les Opérations chimiques" (p. 457 à 465, 2 planches). 2- "Mémoire sur l'Effet que produit sur les Pierres précieuses un degré de feu très-violent" (p. 476 à 485). 3- "Mémoire sur la combinaison de l'Air nitreux avec les airs respirables & sur les conséquences qu'on en peut tirer relativement à leur degré de salubrité" (p. 486 à 491). 4- "Considérations générales sur la Dissolution des Métaux dans les acides" (p. 492 à 511). 5- "Mémoire sur la précipitation des Substances métalliques, les unes par les autres" (p. 512 à 529, 1 planche). 6- "Mémoire sur l'affinité du Principe oxygine [sic] avec les différentes Substances auxquelles il est susceptible de s'unir" (p. 530 à 540). 7- "Mémoire sur l'union du Principe oxygine avec le Fer" (p. 557 à 574). 8- "Mémoire sur la nature des Fluides élastiques aériformes qui se dégagent de quelques Matières animales en fermentation" (p. 560 à 575). (Duveen & Klickstein, n° 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74). 4to, pp. [x], 168, 698, with 20 engraved plates and one folding table. Modern half-calf and marbled boards, entirely uncut. Item Description: (Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1774). 4to. Extract from "Mémoires de Mathematique et de Physique, Présentés à l'Academie des Sciences par divers Savans". Tome VI. Pp. 353-371. Clean and fine. First printing of Laplace's first memoir on the theory of change and probability. Laplace had found that the calculus of differential equations was the foundation of the theory of series, he took this as a starting point "for the next memoir, dealing with what Laplace called "recurro-recurrent" series and their application to the theory of change.the latter part of the memoir illustrates how they (recurro-recurret series) might be applied to the solution of several problemns concerning games of change."(DSB, pp. 278 ff.). - The paper offered here was later combined with other papers in his famous "Theorie analytique des Probabilities" of 1812.Laplace considers three problems in the subject. The first is the problem of the duration of play.the next is that concerned with a lottery.and the third: out of a heap of counters a umber is taken at random; find the chances that this number will be odd or even.(Todhunter Art. 863-865)."Laplaces's contributions to probability and statistics were fundamental: not merely some new results but especially a much greater degree of mathematization. He also changes the emphasis of probability from its preoccupation with moral sciences and jurisprudence to include also applications in scientific contexts, whither it had hitherto infrequently strayed."(Leading Personalities in Statistical Sciences", p. 53). Item Description: (Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1776). 4to. Extract from "Mémoires de Mathematique et de Physique, Présentés à l'Academie des Sciences par divers Savans", Année 1773. Pp. 37-232. a. 1 folded engraved plate. Clean and fine. First printing of Laplace's famous double-memoir in which he made a coupling of probability theory with astronomy. The first memoir here is his third memoir on probability, a follow-up of his groundbreaking paper "Mémoire sur la Probabilité des Causes par les Évènemens" from the same year; the main portion of the paper deals with the theory of chances. He solves different problems, that of odd and even, a solid has p equal faces, which are numbered 2,2,.p: required the probability that in the course of n throws the faces will occur in the order of 1,2,.p., a complicate problem arising with more players, the Problem of Points in the case of two players and with 3 players, on Duration and Play."The present memoir may be regarded as a collection of examples in the history of Finite Differences"(Todhunter). The second memoir constitutes Laplace's "FIRST COMPREHENSIVE PIECE ON THE MECHANICS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM", and his theory of the gravitational force. His modifications of Newton's laws set forth here, became the foundation for his developed celestial mechanics."A close reading of the astronomical part of the dual memoir, Laplace’s first comprehensive piece on the mechanics of the solar system, serves to temper the conventional image of a vindicator of Newton’s law of gravity against the evidence for decay of motion in the planets. Nothing is said about apparent anomalies gathering toward a cosmic catastrophe;on the contrary, the state of the universe is assumed to be steady. The problem is not whether the phenomena can be deduced from the law of universal gravity, but how to do it. Since that appeared to be impossible on a strict Newtonian construction of the evidence, Laplace proposed modifying the law of gravity slightly. He proceeded to try out the notion that gravity is a force propagated in time instead of instantaneously. Its quantity at a given point would then depend on the velocity of bodies as well as on their mass and distance. Even more interesting, the reasoning in this argument was not that of normal ,mathematical astronomy but was of the type that he brought to physics in other, much later writings. Lastly, in a problem that he did handle in the tradition of theoretical astronomy, namely in the secular variations in the mean motions of Jupiter and Saturn, the conclusion is that the mutual attraction of the plants cannot account for them, contrary to what we expect from Mécanique céleste."(DSB). Item Description: Paris: De l’Imprimerie Royale, 1776. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 4to, pp. [viii], xvi, 91, 618 with 19 folding engraved plates (tear to lower corner of front free endpaper. Contemporary French calf, spine richly gilt in compartments with two red lettering-pieces, marbled endpapers, red edges (extremities a bit worn). First edition of one of the most important papers in the history of engineering. “In this one memoir of 1773 there is almost an embarrassment of riches, for Coulomb proceeded to discuss the theory of compressive rupture of masonry piers, the design of vaulted arches, and the theory of earth pressure. In the latter he developed a generalized sliding wedge theory of soil mechanics that remains in use today in basic engineering practice” (DSB). “His most important memoir on mechanics was also his first, “Sur une application des règles de maximis et minimis à quelques problèmes de statique, relatifs à l’architecture” (1773). The purpose of this memoir, he said, was “to determine, as far as a combination of mathematics and physics will permit, the influence of friction and of cohesion in some problems of statics.” Coulomb’s statics problems might seem disconnected to the modern reader, but they were at the heart of eighteenth-century engineering mechanics . . . In the beginning of the 1773 essay, Coulomb introduced three propositions relating to equilibrium and resolution of forces. Following this, he considered friction and cohesion, and gave virtually a theory of the flexure of beams and rupture and shear of brittle materials . . . Following this, he considered cohesion. Friction was seen as resulting from tangential contact between bodies, but cohesion was supposedly due to the effect of close-acting central forces. Cohesion in materials was considered by Coulomb as a mixture of what would today be called shear and tensile strengths . . . Having presented these basic propositions and experiments, Coulomb proceeded to a discussion of the flexing of a beam and correctly determined, for the first time, the neutral surface of a beam . . . Following this, he extended his analysis to the rigid, inelastic case” (DSB). The present volume also contains two important memoirs on celestial mechanics by Lagrange and Laplace. In ‘Sur l’equation seculaire de la Lune’ (pp. 1-61), Lagrange investigated whether the secular acceleration of the Moon could be caused by the gravitational effects of the non-spherical shape of the Earth, concluding that it could not. ‘Sur le principe de la gravitation universelle, & sur les inegalites seculaires des planets qui en dependent’ (pp. 163-232), “Laplace’s first comprehensive piece on the mechanics of the solar system, serves to temper the conventional image of a vindicator of Newton’s law of gravity against the evidence for decay of motion in the planets. Nothing is said about apparent anomalies gathering toward a cosmic catastrophe; on the contrary, the state of the universe is assumed to be steady. Even more interesting, the reasoning in this argument was not that of normal, mathematical astronomy but was of the type that he brought to physics in other, much later writings” (DSB). Item Description: Impremerie du Cercle-Social, Paris, 1796. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo (199x123 mm). 314, [2]; 312, [4] pp. including half titles. Contemporary half calf, spines gilt, some browning and spotting. A fine copy. ---- Sparrow 123; Houzeau & Lancaster 8940 - First edition of one of the most brilliant and successful popularizations of science ever composed. "In the sixth, and last, chapter of Book V, Laplace introduced a speculation on the origin of the solar system and another on the nature of the universe beyond its confines. The former speculation, which has quite generally come to be misnamed the nebulous hypothesis, was presented with the "misgivings" [défiance] that anything should arouse that is in no way the product of observation or calculation. If we were to find a phrase that would characterize what Laplace had in mind. it would not be 'nebular hypothesis'. It would be 'atmospheric hypothesis'. And if, further, we were to identify the context in which he raised the question at all, it would not be the evolution of history of nature. It would be the probability of cause" (DSB Suppl. I, 344). Laplace merits one of the longest articles in DSB and a 5-page section in it devoted to The System of the World was specially commissioned from Dr C.A. Whitney. A pair of errata leaves was added to very few copies, but are omitted from this copy. Bookseller Inventory # 001857

Item Description: Imprimerie du Cercle-Social, Paris, 1796. First edition, with half-titles, without errata as usual. 314, (4); 312, (4) pp. 2 vols. 8vo. "Among the most influential scientists in all history" - DSB. "Book I begins with what any attentive observer may see if he will open his eyes to the spectacle of the heavens on a clear night with a view of the whole horizon. Book II ? sets out the "real" motions of the planets, satellites and comets and gives the dimensions of the solar system. Book III is a verbal précis of the laws of motion as understood in eighteenth-century rational mechanics, with special reference to astronomy and hydrostatics. In Book IV, Laplace in effect summarized his own work in gravitational mechanics. Much of it consists of simplification of the prefatory sections to the published memoirs. The topics are perturbations in planetary motions, the shape of the earth, the attraction of spheroids and the rings of Saturn, motions of the tides and atmosphere, the moons of Jupiter, precession, and lunar motions. Only Book V contains material that Laplace had not written up in technical form or presupposed. It gives an overview of the history of astronomy and concludes with the speculation since called the nebular hypothesis and another on the nature of the universe in outer space." - DSB. Verso of half-title in volume I bears a few bibliographical notes in pencil. Very good 314, (4); 312, (4) pp. 2 vols. 8vo First edition, with half-titles, without errata as usual. Item Description: Heidelberg, Karl Groos, 1819. Contemp. marbled boards. Title-label with gilt lettering probably of more recent date. A stamp on titlepage. XIV,(2),207 pp. Very light browning to a few leaves and margins, otherwise fine. Scarce first German edition of this ground-breaking work. It is the translation of Laplaces's work from 1814 with the title:"Essai philosophique sur la probabilités" as a separate work of Laplaces introduction to the second edition of his "Theorie analytique des probalités". "It contains the famous passage to the effect that the future of the world is completely determined by the past and that one possessed of the mathematical knowledge of the state of the world at any given instant could predict the future." (Morris Kline)."The long introduction that Laplace added to the second edition (of Theorie analytique.) was also published separately in the same year, as "Essai philosophique sur les probabilités".This essay was extremely popular and influential, unlike the "Theorie analytique." it required no guide and was widely read and quoted. The "Essay" was itself the product of years of thought by Laplace; four different versions saw publication even before the first edition appeared !.it presented the ideas of the "Theorie analytique." to a broad popular audience while serving as a synopsis of the full treatise, in part mirroring it in organization. Item Description: L'Impremerie de Crapelet, Ches J. B. M. Duprat, Paris, 1827. FIRST EDITION. Complete with folding plate in Volume 4, all half titles and errata; with an extra errata leaf in Volume 4, uncalled for by Horblit. Volumes I and II printed on paper watermarked "Mecanique Celeste." In prize half calf, gilt arms of Glasgow University, spines elaborately gilt with morocco labels. With prize bookplate awarding this copy to George Johnson in the class of physics, April 1910. Johnson (b.1889) was a navel architect who graduated in 1912. During World War I he worked on the battle-cruiser Renown and submarines for the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. A fine set. pp. First edition, first issue, first state of the author's monumental work in which all the laws of planetary motion are deduced from the concept of universal gravity. It includes all supplements found lacking in many copies. Considered a sequel to Newton's Principia, Laplace argues that the universe was really a great self-regulating machine and that the whole solar system could continue on its existing plan for an immense period of time. This was a great step forward from the Newtonian uncertainties in this area. He also offered a brilliant explanation of the secular inequalities of the mean motion of the moon about the earth, a problem which Euler and Lagrange had failed to solve. This work also contains Laplace's fundamental contribution to the subject of capillarity in which he showed for the first time that capillary phenomena could be explained by the assumption of forces between the ultimate particles of matter, varying inversely as a power higher than the square of the distance. Laplace (1749-1827), considered the Isaac Newton of France, was one of the most influential scientists in the fields of mathematics, celestial mechanics, and physics. He dedicated this major work to Bonaparte (Volume 3), who honored him with the title of Marquis.Dibner, 14; Horblit, 63; Norman, 1277; Printing & the Mind of Man, 252. Bookseller Inventory # 14185
