About this Item: 20 - London - William Heinemann, 1918. Hardcover. Condition: VERY GOOD. A three volume set of poetry by Laurence Hope, rebound in attractive quarter-calf bindings. A psuedonym of Adela Florence Nicolson, Hope dealt often with Indianpoetrytranslations, the country in whichshe worked as a journalist during the late Nineteenth Century for her father, who it is saidto have givenRudyard Kipling his first work in journalism. Here, notable works such as Garden of Kama, originally published in 1901, are presented in ornate bindings, with a portrait of Nicolson to the endpages of Indian Love. Condition: Rebound in decorative quarter-calf binding with gilt detailing and cloth-covered boards. Externally quite smart, there is some minor wear to the boards, extremities, joints and backstrip, as well as some sunning to backstrip. The hinges are also quite strained to Stars of The Desert. Internally, the pages are firmly bound, but are somewhat age-toned, with some additional spotting to endpages and sporadically throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD. Seller Inventory # 045890

About this Item: Dodd, Mead and Company, New York, 1923. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. 1st American Edition; 1st Printing. This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The foredges of the text block are uncut. The dust jacket has edge wear, rubbing, foxing, ground-in dirt, several edge tears, nicks and a couple of snags to the rear spine joint. "It is not merely that these verses describe Oriental scenes and describe them with vividness; there is feeling in the rhythm - a timbre of the words that seems akin to the sand and palm trees and the changeless East." From Wikipedia: "In 1901, she published Garden of Kama, which was published a year later in America under the title India's Love Lyrics. She attempted to pass these off as translations of various poets, but this claim soon fell under suspicion. Her poems often used imagery and symbols from the poets of the North-West Frontier of India and the Sufi poets of Persia. She was among the most popular romantic poets of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Her poems are typically about unrequited love and loss and often, the death that followed such an unhappy state of affairs. Many of them have an air of autobiography or confession." and "She was born on 9 April 1865 at Stoke Bishop, Gloucestershire, the second of three daughters to Colonel Arthur Cory and Fanny Elizabeth Griffin. Her father was employed in the British army at Lahore, and thus she was raised by her relatives back in England. She left for India in 1881 to join her father. Her father was editor of the Lahore arm of The Civil and Military Gazette, and it was he who in all probability gave Rudyard Kipling (a contemporary of his daughter) his first employment as a journalist. " Stars of the Desert was Laurence Hope's second book of poetry - first published in 1903. It was the last of Hope's to appear before her death. Seller Inventory # 30194

About this Item: London, Heinemann, 1906, 1907, 1912., 1912. Three Complete Volumes. 14 cm x 21 cm. Vol I: 174 pages / Vol. II:152 pages / Vol. III:92 pages. Original Hardcovers. Volume III includes a black and white portrait of the author. Very good condition with only very minor signs of external wear, for example rubbing to the spine. Some foxing on first few pages of each volume. Previously annotated volumes. Adela Florence Nicolson (née Cory) (9 April 1865 4 October 1904) was an English poet who wrote under the pseudonym Laurence Hope. In 1901, she published Garden of Kama, which was published a year later in America under the title India's Love Lyrics. She attempted to pass these off as translations of various poets, but this claim soon fell under suspicion. Her poems often used imagery and symbols from the poets of the North-West Frontier of India and the Sufi poets of Persia. She was among the most popular romantic poets of the Edwardian era. Her poems are typically about unrequited love and loss and often, the death that followed such an unhappy state of affairs. Many of them have an air of autobiography or confession. Details on her life are not easy to find due to her relative lack of letters, but Lesley Blanch, in her book Under A Lilac-Bleeding Star, included some biographical information that drew on unpublished memoirs written by her son. In Diaries and Letters from India, Violet Jacob provided some information about the Nicolsons and their milieu, although most of what is known of Violet, as she came to be known, had to be gleaned through her poetry. Despite Nicolson's use of pseudonyms and fictionalised characters, it was apparent to some of her contemporaries that her poems were deeply personal, even confessional. (Wikipedia).
