About this Item: William Creech, Edinburgh, 1793. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Second edition. Hardcover, contemporary full tan calf feathered leather, gilt edged raised bands, red learther spine label, red speckled edges, laid paper, 592 pp; 13 fold-out copper plates, by D. (Daniel) Lizars, depicting various laboratory apparatus + 2 fold-out charts. (all present) . Very good. Corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there, approximately 1/4 inch chip off both head and foot of spine some of the glossy top layer of the leather is scuffed, most notably along the joints and on the rear board, where there is also a 2x3 inch ovoid-shaped dark tan ring mark and a 3/8th inch white drop mark. Internally, previous owner's period bookplate on paste-down front endpaper and the same, partially removed, on paste-down rear endpaper. The text is still mostly ivory-white, with some light tanning on three of the gatherings, sporadic foxing, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked; probably never reallly read. As for the fold-outs, the chart facing p. 255 appears to have been initially folded an inch or so short of the edge of the adjoining leaf, so that there are 2 additional close folds in it to get it to fit in place, that facing p. 338 is trimmed 1/4 inch short on the lower edge (text unaffected) ; plates VIII and XI have a 3/4 inch wide x 4 inch long piece of paper trimmed off the inside edges (illustrations unaffected) , presumably to get them to fit properly, plate XII has a 1 x 3 inch piece trimmed off the lower inside corner (illustrations unaffected) ; blame it on a careless or oveworked apprentice! The second English language edition, appearing after the second French, which, according to the translator's correspondence with Lavoisier, was unauthorized; the changes in this edition were made to show temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit, weights in fractions of British pounds and additional explanatory notes, by the translator; appendices by Lavoisier.
