Item Description: Leinen. London, Wm. Dawson & Sonst, Ltd. and E.Weil, 1954/65, 8°, XXIII, (1), 491; XIII, (3), 173, (5), pp., Frontispiece and 6 plates, Facsimile bookplate of Lavoisier on front paste-down of both volumes, 2 orig. publisher's cloth, dustwrappers. First Edition! - "The principle has been followed in this bibliography of listing each paper and every volume in which Lavoisier's name is given as one of the authors or which were issued by an organization during his tenure of executive office, also in those cases in which his authorship could not be incontestably proved or even when the evidence suggested that he did not write a specific article although he signed his name to it. The circumstances are pointed out in each individual case of this type. All anonymous publications, the original manuscripts of which are preserved and which are printed in the Oeuvres, have also been included. In the notes to each item Lavoisier's relationship to the particular piece under consideration has always been indicated. The material thus assembled is arranged in six sections. Section A contains all his contributions to periodical works arranged in chronological order. Lavoisier's four major works are described in section B. His minor separate works and contributions to separate works will be found in section C. Section D comprises a number of miscellaneous works containing material written by Lavoisier. Section E consists of a group of works which print reports on them submitted to the Academie by Lavoisier or by him in collaboration with others. Section F lists collected works devoted to Lavoisier only and which contain more than one of his writings. The separate numbered items are not only bibliographically described but they are also analyzed as to their content and historical importance. It is realized that the analytical commentaries are extensive, but it was felt that they would be especially useful owing to the scarcity and consequent difficulty in consulting the originals of many of Lavoisier's works." - Introduction. - - Cross references are copiously used, the separate numbered items are not only bibliographically described but they are also analyzed as to their content and historical importance. Item Description: Deterville, Paris, 1801. Lavoisier, Antoine Laurent (1743-94). Opuscules physiques et chimiques. 8vo. xxx, [2], 443pp. 3 folding engraved plates. Paris: Deterville, An IX - 1801. 218 x 140 mm. Modern half morocco, marbled boards in antique style. Minor dampstaining, edges a little frayed, but very good. Second edition. Opuscules physiques et chimiques was Lavoisier's first major work, "an advance over anything which had gone before" (Partington III, p. 393), in which he expressed his first doubts about the validity of the phlogiston theory. The Opuscules contains a history of gases (about which very little was known at the time) and a record of the quantitative experiments Lavoisier had carried out the previous year with great excitement and a presentiment of their revolutionary potential. He attacked the problems of combustion, calcination and air fixation, and solved the questions of whether quicklime is more or less complex than chalk; whether quicklime contains acidum pingue or fixed air; whether a metal is more or less complex than its calx; and whether calcination or combustion of a substance depends on the absorption of air. There are two versions of the 1801 edition of the Opuscules, of which we are offering the second. The first version is actually a reissue of the first edition of 1774 with a new half-title and title; the plates are signed "de la Gardette del. et Sculp." The second version, which is the true second edition, is a complete reprint of the work with the errata corrected in the text and the plates re-engraved by "Tardieu l'ainé Rue de Sorbonne, No. 385." "This issue was printed as a third volume to the 'Troisième Edition' of the Traité elémentaire de chimie, and the three volumes are uniform in size, title-page, format and type. It was the first new printing of the Opuscules since Lavoisier's death" (Duveen & Klickstein 123). Bookseller Inventory # 14820

"The plates have been re-engraved by Delettre" (Duveen & Klickstein, n° 208. (Martin & Walter, 7750). Quelques auréoles claires. Bon exemplaire, bien relié. Bookseller Inventory # 36333

Item Description: Paris, Moutard, 1786. 4to. Contemp. full sprinckled calf with 5 raised bands on spine. Richly gilt compartments, title-and tomelabels with gilt lettering. A small nich to leather at middle of front hinge. A small tear to rear hinge at upper compartment. (4),198,682 pp. Wide-margined, fine and clean. This collective work is the French Academy's monumental treatise on the chemistry and the production of Salpetre, a topic of great importence for the war-industry in making gunpowder. The volume contains papers by Macquer, Darcy, Lavoisier, Sage, Baumé, de la Rochefoucault, Clouer and an anonymous report on experiments made in England (CAVENDISH'S) on the composition of nitric acid.papers by Cornette, Thouvenel and Thouvenel, Le Lorgna, Gavinet and Chevrand, de Beunie, Romme, Clouet and Lavoisier, de Rochefoucault etc.(Partington III, p. 467 n)."The Regie des Poudres et Salpetres had the monopoly of refining salpetre from 1775 until it was suppressed during the Revolution. Until his retirement in 1791 the leading light in it was Lavoisier, who seems to have written its publications. - In 1775 the Academy offered a prize of 4000 livres for a process for procuring an abundant supply of salpetre, the announcement being written by Lavoisier. Altogether 66 papers were received and the prize was finally awarded in 1782 to the brothers Thouvenel, who gave a full account of nitre plantations. The material was published in 1786 in one volume by the Academy.
