CONDITION: Good Plus in Good Minus jacket; 1924 gift inscription, boards extremely clean with bright gilt and white plate, but on close inspection a slight moisture wrinkle affects 2" of all top edge; pages very clean and unwrinkled w one almost 2" closed margin tear; in jacket with little loss of paper but soiled front and major tears on spine crease and back, looks much better in protector than not. Picture Book hardback Very honest, sweet paintings of incidents in children's lives, in delicate colours with simple arts and crafts backgrounds. Boards are covered in tan cloth with gold lettering on the cover and spine, a charming pastedown on the cover and a blindstamp on the back cover. Light red marks on the back cover. Front cover is slightly bowed. Spine is intact but starting to split on the back hinge. Pages are exceptionally clean. No writing inside. No foxing or stains. No rips or bends. Light overall wear.

Juvenile hardback These whimsical stories about children were inspired by a beautiful series of Deco illustrations created by le Mair (as Saida, her Sufi name) for a Colgate FAB detergent advertizing campaign. True, but hard to believe as one looks at the delicate images. Milne, a well known playright, had previously published the children's poetry book When We Were Very Young (1924) but this was his first book of prose. Winnie-the-Pooh followed in 1926. In 105 pages, with 12 soft watercolor full-page glossy plates throughout by illustrator "Saida" (H. Willebeek LeMair). One of these has come completely detached & shows wrinkling & creasing around outer edges; others are intact & perfect! The FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, first printing, from 1925, this hardcover 4to is bound in publisher's light blue cloth over boards, lettered in stamped gilt to front & spine, with a colorful paper pastedown of a child in a gilt-edged box to center front. Condition is VG+: very clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages creamy white with moderate edge tanning, foxing to endpapers only. Page 10 has a smudge & a 2" horizontal tear to fore edge. Modest rubbing to external extremities, bumping to all corners, fraying to both ends of spine. Spine gilt has severely faded. No DJ. Woke-sensitive people should refrain from buying. E. G. on pp. (song Pussy cat where have you been ?) the cat caught a mouse under Victoria's throne). Luckily in modern versions ''caught'' has been changed in ''frightened''.
