About this Item: N.p. n.y., N.p. Undated (likely early 18th century) printed leaf (pp. 83-84) of a European antiphonal book. Folio (8½ X 13 3/4"). Light age toning only, else a lovely vellum-like creamy color. Title and twelve 4-line staves printed in red on each side, with square- and diamond-shaped stemless neumes and text printed in black. Page 84 title "In Epiphania Domini." Interestingly, the lower right corner of page 83 and the lower left corner of page 84 are soiled, evidence of the many years and countless finger-turnings this leaf would have experienced in its liturgical lifespan. About this Item: 16th cent. (?), Spain. Manuscript. Condition: Fine. A single large leaf, approximately 14 by 18 inches, each side containing 5 lines of text and chant in a Spanish(?) round bookhand typical of the 14th to the 16th centuries. The text is from Psalm 142 (Vulgate) , beginning with verse 9: Eripe me, domine, de inimicis meis; doce me facere voluntatem tuam. ("Deliver me, Lord, from my enemies; teach me to do your will.") The music is set in the 'fa' clef in five lines, here rendered in red, with the notes in dark brown. The initial 'E' is in red with fine pinworm decoration. This is leaf cxlvi from the Antiphonal, as is noted on the upper right corners of the obverse. The first line of the obverse finishes the last word of the Introit for the Liturgy: "[taber]nacula tua", an extract from Psalm 42 (Vulgate). Framed nicely in a wooden frame with subtle gilt decoration, and with the reverse visible through a second pane of glass. Probably a Spanish production for monastic use. In very good condition indeed. Seller Inventory # 20148
