Item Description: New York: Leavitt and Allen, [no date - circa 1855]., 1855. Decorative binding. viii, 9-264 pages. Hardcover: H 19cm x L 13cm. Original full brown leather with embossed decoration to boards with each having a bright blue lacquered centerpiece with gilt stamped border and title lettering, mild scuffing to lacquer upon rear board's centerpiece, some abrasion at spine head and along joints as well as at board edges with corners worn, chip at spine heel, gilt stamped spine lettering and decoration rubbed but remains reasonably bright. All edges gilt. Ownership inscription dated 1859 upon front free endpaper; b/w frontispiece plate opposite hand-colored presentation plate; four b/w lithographic plates within text of which the last lacks its tissue guard. One quire and one plate pulled; moisture stains at top edges of rear leaves; closed tear at top margin of pages 215/216; top corner of pages 73/74 removed; pencil scribble on page 75. Features an anthology of short stories in a gift edition format which was popular during the mid-19th century. Text includes "The Sisters of Albano" by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, "The Baron's Vow" by Miss Power, "An Evening at Home" and "The Christmas Party" by Kate Sutherland, etc. A good+ copy of a handsome 19th century gift book.
