Designed by Nesnadny + Schwartz. 48 pp. (including two 2-page gatefolds, with 33 plates by Friedlander. 11 x 8-1/2 inches. Lee Friedlander's work is widely known for transforming our visual understanding of contemporary American culture. Known for passionately embracing all subject matter, Friedlander photographed nearly every facet of American life from the 1950s to the present. From factories in Pennsylvania, to the jazz scene in New Orleans, to the deserts of the Southwest, Friedlander's complex formal visual strategies continue to influence the way we understand, analyze, and experience modern American experience. Friedlander's work continues to influence photographic practice internationally, in part due to the heightened sense of self-awareness that is a trademark of so many of his photographs and in part because of his ability to embrace wide-ranging subject matter, always interpreting it in an elegance that hadn't existed prior to his work. New (from Friedlander's personal archive). Friedlander's automobile-related photographs provide extraordinary visual material as they are recontextualized here as illustrations for the major insurance company's annual report. Item Description: Haywire Press, 1970. Trade Paperback. Book Condition: Fair. First Thus. First printing softcover. The book appears to have been signed by Lee Friedlander on the title page. The book is near good. The principal flaw is the owner has written their name on the front cover (mostly removed and obscured now) and inside the front cover (which bled over to the next page). Otherwise, the book is good plus with shelfwear, reading creases, a small hole on the title page, and some creasing to the covers. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 005408

Item Description: Steidl Publishers, Germany, 2016. Hardback. Book Condition: New. Limited edition. Language: English . Brand New Book. From 1973 to 1974, Lee Friedlander and Burt Wolf edited four iconic portfolios at the Double Elephant Press in New York, featuring photographs by some of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century: Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Walker Evans, Garry Winogrand and Friedlander himself. What started out as a rare match between artistic ability and craftsmanship became the en passant invention of the limited and signed photographer s portfolio as we know it today. Each of the four limited-edition portfolios contained 15 photographs by each artist, representing their distinct visions that can be described in the words of Walker Evans as oddly refreshing, unselfconsciously striking and unpredictably adventurous. This edition honors this unique collaborative project that was to become a touchstone in the history of photography. Bookseller Inventory # AAS9783869307435

Item Description: Jonathan Cape, 1993. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is the First UK Edition, published by Jonathan Cape in 1993, of the large-almost-square (14.75" x 13.75") formatted Letters From the People, a photographic study by Lee Friedlander of the use of letters, numbers and other signs found in the streets. The dust jacket is in good condition, with surface scuffs but no notable stains, and light edge wear, but no tears. The lettering is clean and unfaded. The price ( (£75) is not clipped. The cover, solid black, with the title blind-embossed to the front, is clean and unfaded, with no tears or stains, and no fade to the black. The corners are sharp. The spine is straight. The only writing is a brief inscription, signed by Lee Friedlander, on the title page. This has not been certified, but I know the circumstances and guarantee its authenticity. The inside is clean throughout the book. The only flaw of any kind is slight sunning to some edges. The pages are otherwise flawless, with no stains or scuffs, no tears or creases. The binding is tight, with no loose or missing pages. There are no stamps or other attachments. All the art is in perfect condition. The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of the book conditions.International shipping would be priority insured, with a shipping charge of $80.00.
