Second edition of Tentamina Theodicaeae, the important Latin translation of "Essais de Théodicée" (Essays on Theodicity) by Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz. The translation, editing, and annotation, along with the appended biography and bibliography of Leibniz were made by his friend and correspondent, Bartholomew des Bosses. Portrait of Leibniz on frontispiece. [ALL VOLUMES]: 165x100mm. [560]+[564-966]+[968-1410] pages (preface and references pages unnumbered). Hardcover. White board hardcover with black lettering on spine. Page edges dyed red. Covers charred, worn and stained. Cover edges partly peeling. Pages yellowing with some stains near edges. [VOL.1]: Rear cover and spine partially detached. Rear cover peeling. Spine partly missing. Binding visible between pages 432-433. [VOL.2]: Burn-marks on page edges. Pages 563-590 outer edge damaged (text partly damaged). Most pages upper corner damaged (slight damage to text, especially on pages 841-851 and 925-927). [VOL.3]: Spine partly missing. Burn-marks on page edges and upper corner throughout the first half of the volume, up until page 1100. Some damage to text on pages 968-978. [SUMMARY]: This rare 18th-century Latin translation of Leibniz's work on theodicy has sustained some damage, though little of it affects the text itself.
