About this Item: Henry Holt and Co., Chicago, IL, 1944. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. Illustrated by Crockett Johnson (illustrator). 1st Edition; 1st Printing. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some beginning bumping and "rubbing. There is a very slight slant to the spine of the book. The text pages are clean and bright. The endpapers have some light, generalized toning. The dust jacket has several edge nicks, tears and small chips missing. The rear dust jacket panel has noticeable overall toning. As per Baumgarten, the book has a dust jacket price of two dollars. "A year ago, when we published Barnaby, we had to introduce him and his pudgy, goldbricking, pink-winged, cigar-smoking Fairy Godfather, Mr. O'Malley to people who were unlucky enough not to have access to a newspaper where the strip was running. But now Barnaby and Mr. O'Malley have swept the country. It has been a landslide year for both of them; dozens of newspapers have added the feature about them, to the enhancement of their circulation -- This, therefore, and quite simply, is the New Barnaby Book. It has the very cream of the cream in it, from the magic but non-germinating seeds which Mr. O'Malley supplied for Barnaby's victory garden right on through the sequences with Gus the ghost, the search for the father of Gorgon the talking dog, and many others to the last regrettable affair of Mr. O'Malley and his campaign for Congress - financed by a trunkful of old Confederate two-dollar bills." "Crockett Johnson (October 20, 1906 – July 11, 1975) was the pen name of the American cartoonist and children's book illustrator David Johnson Leisk. He is best known for the comic strip Barnaby (1942–1952) and the Harold series of books begun with Harold and the Purple Crayon. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is a light slant to the spine of the book. The text pages are clean and bright. All edges of the text block have noticeable foxing. The dust jacket is clean and bright but does have a couple of small spots of discoloration and some light toning to the rear panel along with one small semi-closed tear to the bottom front spine joint. "For those who have not yet formed the habit, we herewith report that BARNABY is a picture strip about a little boy named Barnaby who wanted a fairy godmother, and wished upon a star. What he got was a fairy godfather, with pink wings and a paunch, named Mr. O'Malley. Now Mr. O'Malley is, we hope, untypical of fairy godfathers.
