About this Item: Accord Productions Ltd., 1968., 1968. Folio. 1st and only edition. Large format, foolscap, wrappers. Wrappers a little creased and with two old staple marks. Loosely inserted are two signed typed letters and one signed autograph letter from Len Deighton to Liz and Derek Jewell. Jewell [1927 - 1985] was a writer, broadcaster, critic and publishing director of Time Newspapers. Deighton was a friend and they socialised regularly. The autograph letter relates to an advert that Deighton was proposing to write for American Express. The script is, in my experience, the rarest item in Deighton's canon. He asked for his name to be removed from the final screen credits for Richard Attenborough's film, a decision he later described as childish. Seller Inventory # 34237

About this Item: 1 - [1] carta. Everyone I meet claims to know you personally! They must have kept you awfully busy here [.] ».4 - Con riferimento al lavoro che Rolando Pieraccini stava svolgendo sui « personaggi finlandesi nella letteratura mondiale »: « [?] I can best recall the Finnish setting of my own book Billion Dollar Brain (which was later made into a film starring Michael Caine). Because I am only visiting England (the above address is that of my agent) I do not have a copy of this book to hand. But I remember that there was a lovely Finnish girl in my story [?] ». About this Item: London: Hodder and Stoughton., 1962. [Cold-War thriller]. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.224. Publisher's orange cloth in original dustwrapper (without reviews). A clean, bright, near fine copy of the book in similar wrapper with a little rubbing to crown and some inevitable laminate shrinkage. A striking example of a book that wears easily. Len Deighton's classic debut spy story, introducing the cult figure of Harry Palmer (although the character's name remained anonymous for some time). Famously portrayed by Michael Caine in the film of the same name (1965), a role he reprised twice in the sixties, followed by two further outings (as a retired secret agent) in the mid-nineties. Described by Ian Fleming in the Sunday Times as one of his 'Books of the Year'. Book Collector No.287 (p32-62) 'The Sixties'. Milward-Oliver; Len Deighton Annotated Bibliography. About this Item: Hodder & Stoughton / Jonathan Cape, 1962-66, 1962. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A lovely, first edition, first impression (and first state, where applicable) set of the four Harry Palmer novels, comprising The IPCRESS File (1962), Horse Under Water (1963), Funeral in Berlin (1964) and Billion Dollar Brain (1966). All four are notably crisp and clean and at least Near Fine in very bright and crisp dustwrappers. The IPCRESS File has been signed by Len Deighton on a plate to the ffep; a Fine copy in a first-state, unclipped, Near Fine dust wrapper with a tiny bit of toning to the extreme edges and a crease by the top-edge of the rear panel. Horse Under Water is the first-state with crossword endpapers and is complete with the scarce ‘crossword competition’ insert laid-in. A sharp, Near Fine+ copy, Fine but for some very faint/tiny spots to the edge of the page block; the clipped, Near Fine dustwrapper shows a little rubbing and toning to the extreme edges, and – very faintly – a few spots from the verso. Funeral in Berlin is Fine, and delightfully fresh, with a gentle bump to the tip of one corner. The clipped dustwrapper is about Near Fine: very bright, with a little toning to the extreme top edge and some wrinkling by the head of the spine. Billion Dollar Brain is Near Fine, showing a little tanning to the top-edge of the page block; bookseller’s (Foyles) label to the foot of the front pastedown. The unclipped dustwrapper is Very Good (or better): crisp and attractive, with light wear to the extremities, and the inevitable scratching and rubbing to the foil; rubbed to the spine folds and a short (1cm) closed tear to the head of the upper panel – a nice example of a notoriously fragile wrapper. The dustwrappers are presented in removable, archival-quality Brodart protective covers. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. Shipped free within the United Kingdom; a heavy set that will incur additional shipping (to cost) outside the UK. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # H854
