An inscribed first US edition, first printing, of the Ipcress File, together with first UK editions, first impressions, of the three following novels in the Harry Palmer series. The Ipcress File's title page is inscribed, "For Chris & Malcolm best wishes - Len Deighton". Billion-Dollar Brain was originally published in America two months prior to the UK edition. Deighton's first novel, the Ipcress File was first published in London in 1962. The US edition followed a year later and retains Raymond Hawkey's striking jacket design, which Deighton much admired. The design "went against the prejudice of the book trade at the time in that it was monochromatic, used discreet typography and a photographic rather than a drawn illustration" (Milward-Oliver). This aesthetic was continued for the works that followed, the Billion-Dollar Brain with the additional feature of being attractively printed on metallic paper. Milward-Oliver, pp. 27-30. 4 works, octavo. Original black, red, and blue boards, spines lettered in orange and gilt, final three works with illustrated front covers and endpapers. With dust jackets. Funeral in Berlin with ownership inscription and ink and blind stamps, dated 1964, of one Robin Duncan. Bumps to board edges, foxing to edges of Funeral in Berlin, all contents clean; jackets a little creased, occasional nick and mark, unclipped: a very good set in like jackets.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. HARDBACK - A near fine book bound in black cloth boards that are very clean indeed with un-faded silver lettering to the spine. Internally, the pages are clean and white, free of any previous owner names or inscriptions, and with no foxing present. The red top stain shows a little fading but is still has its red colouring. Boldly signed by the author to the top of the title page. A set of the scarce Hitler stamps are included with the book. The stamps looked so authentic that the Royal Mail had most sets destroyed upon the books publication. Also included is the SS -GB Whitehall post card which shows the German army performing a victory parade down Whitehall on the 20th April 1941. The dust wrapper is a very good or better example with no fading to the red lettering to the spine. There is a faint water mark to the bottom of the front panel, otherwise, a very nice example. Signed by Author(s).

[Cold-war spy thriller] SIGNED FIRST EDITION, first impression. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.[1] 319 [2]. Publisher's black cloth with blue rubber-stamp motif and blind 'downgraded to unclassified' box blocked to upper board, gilt titles to spine. With the photographic dust-jacket designed by Raymond Hawkey priced at 18s., wraparound advertising sash. Top edge a little dusty/spotted else fine, in a near fine jacket. The fragile paper band has a tear to rear and a little toning to the spine. Basis for the classic film starring Michael Caine as 'Harry Palmer', produced by Harry Saltzman who made the Bond movies; mention of the film 'From Russia, With Love' appears on the dust-wrapper flap, as does a quote from Queen magazine, claiming Deighton's hero was "James Bond's most serious rival". This is one of a small number of promotional copies with a wraparound band featuring a photograph of 007 creator Ian Fleming and Len Deighton in conversation; Ian Fleming was a fan and had chosen Deighton's 1962 novel The Ipcress File as his 'thriller of the year'. From the comprehensive James Bond collection of Ian Fleming bibliographer Jon Gilbert, with accompanying provenance. Milward-Oliver: Len Deighton, p.29. Gilbert: Ian Fleming The Bibliography, p.632.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Jacket designs by Raymond Hawkey. (illustrator). First edition set. First editions, first impressions. 4 vol. 8vo. Original boards. Dust-jackets, all correctly priced. An unusually good set of the first quartet of Deighton's "Harry Palmer" novels (although the character is never actually named in the books); increasingly difficult to find as a set and in comparable condition, here with the original crossword slip in the second book as called for. The stories' popularity received an additional bolstering from the three film versions made starring Michael Caine, and have enjoyed ongoing success for fans of spy fiction, not least as a counterpoint to Fleming's James Bond novels. IPCRESS File: an excellent copy; jacket with just a little rubbing and very minor toning to spine, overall very good. Horse Under Water: with original loose crossword clean, a very good; jacket with usual slight toning to spine, overall very good. Funeral In Berlin: a couple of small tape marks to boards; jacket a little browned at top edge with slight toning to spine, slightly rubbed at head of spine, otherwise very good. Billion-Dollar Brain: very good copy of the book; jacket with some rubbing to lower edge and foot of spine, some minor creasing and scratching, otherwise very good. Book.

First Edition. First edition. Signed by Len Deighton on both the Contents booklet and a small note on his stationary: "1st Mar '88 Dear Phil Thanks for writing. I have great pleasure in signing the Jackdaw. Seeing it again brought back memories of long ago[.] With every good wish, Len Deighton P.S. Yes I agree. The death is still surrounded in mystery." The acclaimed spy novelist was a co-author of this rare collection of historical documents and information about the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy arranged in a folder for nonlinear perusal and careful consideration. This was the odd format of the publisher's books; it was an experimental offshoot of Jonathan Cape. All documents present and in Near Fine shape overall. Light wear, a few of the punch-out buildings for Dealey Plaza are detached and laid into their diecut holes, one staple of folder loose. Scarce signed, especially by the best-known contributor.

First Edition. (London: Accord Productions Limited 1968). First Edition of the film script. Screen adaptation of the well-knowmn stage play. Card covers in VG condition with no inscriptions. Typescript foolscap. Some rubbing to covers and creases to both the front and back covers. Two old saple marks to the front cover. Deighton was dissatisfied with the process of producing this film and the outcome, and his name was removed from the credits, something which he now describes as childish. However, he was closely involved with David Attenborough (the Director) in getting it produced, and his ideas - such as the plight of the poor bloody infantry seen in many of his books - come across in the script. (The Deighton Dossier). Photographs/scans available upon request. An exceptionally rare Len Deighton item.

[Espionage fiction] FIRST EDITION. Two copies (regular and variant). Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.255;[1] blank. Publisher's red cloth lettered in gilt to spine. Black "office stamp" motif and blind-stamped DOWNGRADED TO UNCLASSIFIED on front board, with plain black endpapers. Dust-wrapper designed by Raymond Hawkey. With a second copy, in publisher's black cloth without blocking to the front cover, lettered in silver to the spine, with 'crossword' printed endpapers and the loose 'crossword competition' form inserted. Both books with some acceptable marking/toning, the competition slip has an area of browning/soiling. A very good pair. The red decorative cloth with gilt lettering is the publisher's standard binding. The plain black cloth with silver lettering is the variant binding, possibly a trial. The variant is rather scarce in our experience and is not noted in the Deighton bibliography. Milward-Oliver; Len Deighton Annotated Bibliography, p.28 (for the standard copy).

So authentic looking were the stamps that five years after they were issued many philatelists believed them to be have been produced during the Second World as either a German propaganda device, or to quote the Stamp Magazine, for a more sinister purpose . Edward Milward-Oliver: "Len Deighton: An Annotated Bibliography 1954-1985". The GPO took a very dim view of these at the time and most of them were recalled and destroyed.
