About this Item: Blue Ribbon Books, Inc., New York, New York, U.S.A., 1932. Hardcover. Condition: Good-Minus. No Jacket. Lentz, Harold (illustrator). 1st Edition. This is a scarce child's book with four working pop ups in color. There also are many black-and-white illustrations of high artistic caliber. The story of Pinocchio continues to attract attention. Some, if not most, children believe their teddy bears, stuffed animals, action figures, etc. come to life, perhaps when they are sleeping or away. Pinocchio builds on that theme. It is a wonderful story of a wooden puppet and the toymaker, both of whom have lives and adventures. In Pinocchio's case, he eventually becomes a real boy. Pop up books have a hard life. They usually are quite fragile and they have to withstand the constant and often rough treatment of the young reader. To find complete and working pop ups in a book of this vintage is quite unusual. Happy to say, this book contains working pop ups, although several have been repaired. As a book, this one was sturdy, with pages of stiff card stock. However, binding such a book is tricky and most surviving copies of this particular title are in some state of disrepair. For this copy, a previous owner used transparent tape of the type that discolors with age on the external boards and spine, as well as on some of the internal pages. However, the advantage is that the book is still whole, with a reasonably tight binding, and complete, except for minor paper loss at the spine heel. The illustrations are the book's highlights; in a word, they are amazing. The color endpapers are near fine. The 96 pages are clean and unmarked (with the exception of the penciled name, date, and address of the girl who owned it on the blank white verso of the front inside endpaper. This is not a pristine copy of this highly sought after and collectible title, but it is worthy of the collector's shelf and is offered at a competitive price (compare with other offerings). About this Item: Blue Ribbon Books, New York, 1932. Decorated Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Jacket. First Edition. 96 pp, with 4 elaborate pop-ups. (Pages are 9 by 7 inches.) Bright color illustrated boards, well protected by the DJ, which is the same design. Bright color illustrated endpapers. Of particular novelty is the first pop-up which shows Pinocchio reading a book with pages that open. Some tiny spotted foxing on preliminaries and a few leaves elsewhere have these speck-sized spots but overall text and plates very clean. One pop-up has minor surface paper rawness in corner, not affecting pictorial. One pop-up had small tear now repaired. Evidence of clumsy repair to spine using glue in narrow brown stain on upper and lower foreedge by the spine. Book now tight and tightened. Tape was also used in this earlier repair by spine in a few pages; now only light inobtrusive evidence of such. Some tape in DJ edge. Still very rare for book to have surviving DJ! Overall, VG in all respects. Seller Inventory # 001294
