On the half-title is the inked inscription " To my friend David [Bland] This first poor proof volume from Barnett [Freedman],Feb. 1946".There must be a good explanation for this slightly baffling inscription - if anyone out there knows the answer, please tell me,& I'll amend this entry accordingly. The cloth is rubbed at the head & foot of the spine,& on the corners.Four small, very pale splash marks are visible on the upper cover. The front free endpaper & the half-title are both creased, but the book is otherwise in fine state internally. Please note that this the first volume only of a six volume set. Item Description: 8vo, 22.5cm,[84]pp. (including fly-titles in the artist's hand), [London: Printed at the Curwen Press, for The Limited Editions Club, New York, 1951.], 1951. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 4 lithographic cloth covers, 2 title-pages, colophon, and various drawings winthin the text, 6 double-page endpapers, and 32 full-page pictorial lithographs (16 in 6 workings, 16 in 3 workings), all in colours and all from the stone. 16 full-pages for the beginnings of the 8 parts in 3 workings. Quarter black buckram with gilt spine titling (Anna Karenina, proof Lithographs, Barnett Freedman), spine rubbed. Oatmeal cloth sides, gilt top, upper board inscribed A.N.C.V from Barnett Freedman. Lower board somewhat waterstained, but contents fine. It was a charming habit of Brnett Freedman's to create such books of first proofs for friends. Occasionally, he included stage-proofs of lithographs, the lack of these is made up for by the mass of his red ink annotation and lengthy calligraphic title. Colonel Arthur N.C. Varley, was the chairmain of the famous advertising agency Colman, Prentis and Varley (founded 1934), which both ran campaigns for the Conservative Party and commissioned work for Edward Bawden from Fortnum and Mason. Barnett Freedmans friend, Jack beddington, was Secretary to this firm. Inscribed by Illustrator(s). Bookseller Inventory # 10938

Item Description: 1878. TOLSTOY, Count Leo. THE COSSACKS: A TALE OF THE CAUCASUS IN 1852. Translated From The Russian By Eugene Schuyler. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1878. 12mo., red cloth, stamped in black & gilt; 313 pages plus four pages of advertisements. First American Edition, precedes the English edition by one year. Rare! This novel, first published in Russia in 1863, tells the tale of the Cossack life and people and a Russian aristocrat who fall in love with a Cossack girl. This is the first American edition of this work and is very scarce. Schuyler was an American scholar, writer, explorer and high-ranking diplomat. He was also the first American translator of Russian writers Ivan Turgenev and Leo Tolstoy. Signed presentation from Schuyler on a front blank page: "To Mrs. King of the Mulleins, the first copy for the first acquaintance, Eugene Schuyler. July 19, 1878. Bellows Falls." Certainly an early copy off the press, or perhaps the very first, the inscription appears to be to Schuyler's mother-in-law, Mary Ray King, wife of John Alsop King, the 22nd Governor of New York. Schuyler's wife, Gertrude, was their daughter and her mother was a widow at the time this presentation was made. As a matter of fact, contemporary musician and guitarist David Crosby is a distant relative. Schuyler's mother, Matilda Scribner, was also the half-sister of the publisher, Charles Scribner- so it is quite possible that this may be the first copy. A unique copy and very rare! Good (little bubbling to cloth & some wear to spine ends with bit of shallow chipping head of spine; some darkening spine; contents clean & tight with one middle signature a little pulled). $1,750.00.
