Item Description: 1957. No Binding. Book Condition: Near Fine. A conductor, composer, and pianist, Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) is one of the best-known names in 20th century classical music. He worked closely with several symphony orchestras, particularly the New York Philharmonic, while writing a number of symphonies and other pieces, including the music for "West Side Story." He holds eleven Emmy Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. The Fredric R. Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv is the home of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and has been since it opened in 1957. Leonard Bernstein conducted the orchestra there a number of times as a guest conductor, and in 1988 the IPO gave him the lifelong honor of Laureate Conductor. The auditorium is known as heichal hatarbut, the hall of culture. This first day cover celebrates the October, 1957 inaugural concert at the Mann Auditorium. The cachet has a silver oval, in the center of which is a design meant to look like sheet music. The logo of the Israel Philharmonic is in gold on a blue background on the left page. To the right is the year 1957, in silver on white; the Hebrew for the year 5718 (begun in September 1957) is superimposed in blue. There are three stamps: one shows the auditorium's exterior in grayscale, one is white and blue with the IPO logo again and the date in both English and Hebrew, and one is part of the Festivals 5718 series - blue with an ancient Hebrew seal. An oval, red IPO cancellation infringes on the IPO stamp, and a circular black "concert d'inauguration centre culturel tel aviv-yafo" cancellation covers the bottom left corner of the Festivals stamp. Bernstein signed the cover at the bottom center, in blue ink. A bit of soil along the edges/at the corners. Near fine. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # A00295
