Please feel free to ask for particulars and/or additional photographs. . After years of painting, Shafer was building quite a list of collectors and meeting many who were interested in the Old West. About this time, he began to get the urge to sculpt the Old West—the cattleman, the prospector, the mountain man, and the Indian. First working in wood, he quickly learned the medium was too confining and he could not go far enough with it. He wanted his sculpture to come alive and wax was the perfect medium. All the while maintaining a commercial art studio, Shafer’s plan was finally working—his sculptures and paintings were finally selling. His first sculpture was cast in bronze in 1966. In August 1968, with the bronze sculpting taking all of his time, Shafer closed the commercial art business. Six different foundries were involved in casting his work—Phippen Bronze in Topeka, plus foundries in New York, Italy and England. Furthermore, Miller Nichols of the J. C. Nichols Foundation in Kansas City commissioned Shafer to do a large sculpture, The Santa Fe Wagon Master, which was dedicated in September 1973. The Wagon Master recreates the battle of Westport and stands on the lawn on the north side of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel (formerly the Alameda Plaza Hotel) on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. In almost nine years, Shafer sculpted nearly 150 sculptures that were cast in bronze. In 1975, L. E. "Gus" Shafer died May 5, 1985 at Overland Park, Kansas after suffering a heart attack. Eva helped establish the Shafer Gallery in 1992 in his honor. She died March 23 2005. Their only daughter, Patricia Shafer Rapp, and two granddaughters, Kristy and Kerry, survive them.
