Dat dankte hij met name aan zijn 20 zangen en 20 duizend verzen tellende heldendicht 'Der Messias' dat de lijdensgeschiedenis en verrijzenis van Christus verhaalt. Hij had er van 1748 tot 1773 aan gewerkt. Van de Kasteele werd er door geïnspireerd om een bijbels heldendicht te schrijven, maar zijn 'Henoch' kwam niet verder dan de eerste zang. Klopstocks land- en generatiegenoot Wieland (1733 - 1813) was een typische vertegenwoordiger van de Verlichting. Hij werd wel de Duitse Voltaire genoemd.
