Marbled endpapers. 12 × 8cm, xxxviii + 249pp, 1pp publisher's ad. The binding is signed"Rel. executee pour La Lib. Louis Conard". French text. This copy belonged to Victoria Sackville-West (mother of Vita), and has been signed and dated (1908) by her to the ffep, and with her bookplate to the front pastedown. Though overshadowed by her daughter, Victoria's life was no less exciting. She was the illegitimate daughter of Lionel Sackville-West, a diplomat, and his Andalusian mistress, Josefa Duran (the Pepita of Vita's book). In the late 1880s she lived at the family home, Knole in Kent, a house she loved. Knole was taken from her by her brother's claim to the estate. The thoughts and musings of Cardinal Retz (Jean-François de Gondi, 1613-1679), a French prelate and agitator in the Fronde (the series of civil wars in France between 1648 and 1653). Condition: This is a very nice copy with a few signed of wear. There is 3.5cm thin surface loss to marbled paper covering the rear board, and another bookplate opposite Victoria's. The pages have light and occasional spotting but are clean and the binding is secure. Signed. Seller Inventory # 006652

About this Item: Lettre autographe signée LETOURNEAU, Ingouville près Le Havre, 18 septembre 1814, adressée au Rédacteur du Journal de La Quotidienne à Paris, au retour de Louis XVIII, après les " Cent jours ". 5 pages in-4°, adresse et marques postales. A l'ouverture de la lettre, un morceau de papier de la quatrième page est resté collé au cachet de cire rouge. Il manque plusieurs lettres sans gêner la lecture du texte. Huissier de profession , appelé à siéger à la Commune de Paris, Jourdeuil devint administrateur de police. Comme membre du Comité de Surveillance de la Commune, il signa de nombreux ordres d'arrestations et favorisa les massacres de septembre en co-signant la circulaire enjoignant aux provinces d'imiter Paris. Sans fortune en 1789, l'achat du vaste couvent des Filles du Saint Sacrement rue Cassette à Paris montre son enrichissement. Puis il va siéger en 1793 au tribunal révolutionnaire comme juré. Il contribua à l'installation de Fouquier Tinville et de plusieurs de ses anciens collègues comme jurés. Il fut nommé adjoint du Ministre de la guerre. Accusé d'avoir fait arrêter et fusiller un officier, il est arrêté, emprisonné et bénéficie de l'amnistie générale d'octobre 1795. Devenu assesseur d'un juge de paix, il est condamné à la déportation par arrêté des Consuls (1799). Mais grâce à la protection particulière de Fouché il en est épargné. Puis il disparait et ne refait parler de lui qu'avec cette lettre de dénonciation.
