Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, an extensive study of a famed and treasured group of Roman marble and bronze sculptures known as the Family of Lycomedes, considers the history and artistic interpretations of the collection. First discovered in Italy in the 18th century, the sculptures were believed to depict the mythological story of Achilles, disguised as a woman, hiding among King Lycomedes' daughters to avoid the Trojan War. However, the author questions this traditional interpretation, examining each sculpture individually and arguing that this famous collection is not a singular cohesive work as previously thought. Instead, the author provides a detailed description of each statue, offering alternative interpretations of their intended meanings and the possible historical context surrounding their creation and assembly. Through meticulous research and analysis, this book challenges conventional understandings of one of the most renowned collections of ancient art, inviting readers to reconsider the complexities and nuances of classical sculpture and mythological storytelling. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
