Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Newly discovered letters by Lewis Carroll, an expanded selection of diary excerpts, and a wealth of new biographical materials are some of the features of this revised Norton Critical Edition. This perennially popular Norton Critical Edition again reprints the 1897 editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass along with the 1876 edition of The Hunting of the Snark. Each text is fully annotated and the original illustrations are included. An unusually rich "Backgrounds" section is arranged to correspond with three clearly defined periods in Lewis Carroll's life. Letters and diary entries interwoven within each period emphasize the biographical dimension of Carroll's writing. Readers gain an understanding of the author's family and education, the evolution of the Alice books, and Carroll's later years through his own words and through important scholarly work on his faith life and his relationships with women and with Alice Hargreaves and her family. Reflecting the wealth of new scholarship on Alice in Wonderland and Lewis Carroll published since the last edition, Donald Gray has chosen eleven new critical works while retaining five seminal works from the previous edition. Two early piecesan essay by Charles Dickens and poem by Christina Rossettitake a satirical look at children's literature. The nine new recent essays are by James R. Kincaid, Marah Gubar, Robert M. Polemus, Jean-Jacques Lecercle, Gilles Deleuze, Roger Taylor, Carol Mavor, Jean Gattegno, and Helena M. Pycior. The Selected Bibliography has been updated and expanded. Newly discovered letters by Lewis Carroll, an expanded selection of diary excerpts, and a wealth of new biographical materials are some of the features of this revised Norton Critical Edition. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A very good minus copy, bound in finely woven red cloth with 3 gilt rectanglar border rules on the front and rear boards. With the Mock Turtle in a gilded circular cameo on the rear boards. With white endpapers and black lettering along the spine. The cloth is edge-worn and dulled; the spine is slightly slanted with readable lettering. All edges are gilded. With a name in ink on the front endpaper. Following the two pages of ads at the end, there are three newspaper clippings from 1931 glued onto the rear endpapers, one featuring a photograph of the original Alice-- Alice Pleasance Liddell Hargreaves. In addition there is a special tipped-in sheet on sturdy glossy photographic paper with a lengthy facsimile handwritten passage about "happy summer days" with a cameo photo of a young Alice at the bottom of the sheet. This special sheet appears opposite the title page with the specially decorated lettering: "A Christmas Gift to a Dear Child in Memory of a Summer Day." An attractive but used copy with bumped corners and a tiny snag on the front boards not affecting the gilt lettering. Wear to the top and bottom of the spine and at the corners. An enchanting copy, nonetheless. Carroll had known the Liddell children since around March 1856, when he befriended Harry Liddell.[14] He met Lorina by early March as well.[15] In June 1856, he took the children out on the river.[16] Robert Douglas-Fairhurst, who wrote a literary biography of Carroll, suggests that Carroll favoured Alice Pleasance Liddell in particular because her name was ripe for allusion.[17] "Pleasance" means pleasure and the name "Alice" appeared in contemporary works including the poem "Alice Gray" by William Mee, of which Carroll wrote a parody; and Alice is a character in "Dream-Children: A Reverie", a prose piece by Charles Lamb.[17] Carroll, an amateur photographer by the late 1850s,[18] produced many photographic portraits of the Liddell children but none more than Alice, of whom 20 survive.[19] Carroll began writing the manuscript of the story the next day, although that earliest version is lost. The girls and Carroll took another boat trip a month later, when he elaborated the plot to the story of Alice, and in November he began working on the manuscript in earnest.[20] To add the finishing touches he researched natural history in connection with the animals presented in the book and then had the book examined by other children particularly those of George MacDonald. Though Carroll did add his own illustrations to the original copy, on publication he was advised to find a professional illustrator so the pictures were more appealing to its audiences. He subsequently approached John Tenniel to reinterpret Carroll's visions through his own artistic eye, telling him that the story had been well liked by the children. Carroll began planning a print edition of the Alice story in 1863.[21] He wrote on 9 May 1863 that MacDonald's family had suggested he publish Alice.[11] A diary entry for 2 July says that he received a specimen page of the print edition around that date.[21] On 26 November 1864, Carroll gave Alice the manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, with illustrations by Carroll, dedicating it as "A Christmas Gift to a Dear Child in Memory of a Summer's Day". The published version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is about twice the length of Alice's Adventures Under Ground and includes episodes, such as the Mad Tea-Party, that did not appear in the manuscript.[24][21] The only known manuscript copy of Under Ground is held in the British Library.[21] Macmillan published a facsimile of the manuscript in 1886. (Wikipedia) First Edition of this Facsimile edition with title page date of 1886. With "Richard Clay and Sons, London and Bungay" and stamped "Printed in Great Britain" on the copyright page.
