About this Item: D. Appleton, New York, 1926. Cloth Spine on Deco Bds Illust. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No DJ. Bateman, H.M. (illustrator). First Edition, with number "1" Present. Yes, this 119 page legendary humor First edition (with number "1" present at rear), being an increasingly well respected and energetically applauded offering it is proudly presented with great and well deserved hubris by Hirschfeld Galleries in the publishers ORIGINAL binding. Said binding being black cloth spine on pictorial boards with paper pastedown illustration to front cover. And this treasure is rock solid, tight and clean, save for some usual light edgewear plus a finger sized chip from bottom of front cover. b&w illustrations by H. M. Bateman. But their is nothing imperfect about these writings by Carroll with well-drawn witty b&w drawings throughout by the renowned cartoonist Bateman. Alas, when all is said and done and the proverbial geese have come home to nest or roost, or whatever, and you're ready to decide to invest some of your hard-earned cash in this lofty offering, please consider that this book does indeed have the four absolute uppermost qualities we at Hirschfeld Galleries since 1931 have always sought, and demanded, in books: 1) excellence in content, 2) literary quality, 3) appealing design, and 4) significance of contribution. Another great altruistic offering opportunity for us and an even greater opportunity for self-actualized reception on your part. But enough of the lugubrious however allegorically wise jaw-jacking, enough said of the telluric parameters of select Hirschfeld Galleries' offerings such as this one which take on a life of their own and speak so very loudly for themselves. Read to learn and enjoy; go forth to share and enjoin. Research, analysis, dissertation, lucubrations or just enjoyment, this is the one. ACTUAL BOOK FOR SALE PICTURED. About this Item: New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1866. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Tenniel, John (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, second and earliest obtainable issue, with variant A page [5] with "Alice! A childish ", variant A page [6] with "Rabbit Hole," variant A title page with the 'b' in 'bye' directly above and somewhat to the right of the 'T' in 'Tenniel.' Publisher's red cloth, with an illustration of Alice to the front board in gilt, illustration of the Cheshire Cat to the rear board in gilt, lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, black coated endpapers. Very good, with some toning and dimming to the spine, discreet repairs to the spine ends, light soiling to the boards, corners lightly rubbed and bumped, spine cracked and holding inside the front cover, Mission ownership stamp the front pastedown, one or two faint spots to the otherwise very clean pages. A very square and attractive copy, very scarce in the original cloth. Housed in a custom folding box. Taylor 2. The true first issue of Alice was published by Macmillan in London in a print run of 2,000 copies, but was quickly suppressed because neither author nor artist approved of the quality of the reproductive illustrations. Macmillan sold its remaining pages to Appleton in New York, who bound this second issue with a cancel title page. Aside from the new title, the Appleton Alice agree with all textual issues of the 1865 Alice, including the slight variants on page [5] and [6], which neither indicate collecting priority nor earlier printing. Similarly, the slightly different Appleton title pages are the result of the book being "printed in pairs from two nominally identical settings of type." Only a handful of the true first issue survived (many were donated to children's hospitals), making this second issue the first obtainable issue. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson wrote the nonsensical story Alice's Adventures in Wonderland under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll for Alice Liddell, who was a frequent subject of Dodgson's revolutionary portrait photography. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland includes a black and white frontispiece along with forty-two in-text illustrations by John Tenniel, Dodgson's frequent artist collaborator. Seller Inventory # LC110

Some very small chips to spine extremities, small, one half inch area of wear (through the cloth) on rear joint, minimal rubbing to lower corners, some very minor staining to covers, still one of the best copies that we have seen - entirely untouched, the inner hinges absolutely sound. Chemised within a quarter red morocco clamshell case. This is one of the 1,952 sets of sheets of the original suppressed 1865 print run, that were sent to Appleton in New York for machine-folding and binding-up with a substituted New York title-page. The last example of the original 48 copies (see detailed note below) of the 1865 Alice to appear at auction was the Montagu-Rosenbach-Johnson-Kettaneh-Schiller copy. That copy was rebound in Morocco by Rivière for L.S. Montagu and had with it ten of the original drawings by John Tenniel. It fetched $1.4 million at Christie's New York in December 1998.It is extremely unusual to find a copy of this book that has never been touched, repaired or strengthened in some way. In over fifty years I cannot recall seeing more than a handful of 'untouched' copies - this is actually an 1865 Alice but with a New York title-page (DJB)."The first edition, familiarly known to book-collectors as 'the 1865 Alice', was printed at the Oxford University Press. This edition was at the last moment cancelled by the author, for whom Macmillan's were publishing 'on commission' (i.e. as agent, not sponsors) because of what was considered the poor printing of Sir John Tenniel's almost equally famous illustrations. The few early copies sent out were recalled; seemingly with fair success, since less than a score are known to survive today. The book was then reprinted, by Clay, with the title-page re-dated 1866, and this constitutes the first regularly published edition. Dodgson thriftily sold 500 copies of the suppressed 1865 printing for publication, with suitably altered title-page, by Appleton's of New York in 1866" (Printing and the Mind of Man)."On the suppression of the first (1865) edition, Messrs. Macmillan were left with a number of unbound sheets on their hands. These, one would have thought, would have been destroyed, but, from motives of economy perhaps, or may be because the defects in the illustrations were only apparent to the author, they were not destroyed? It is known that these sheets were sold to Messrs. Appleton of New York ?[who] removed the Macmillan title page and substituted one with their own imprint, had the sheets bound in London, probably in the covers intended for the original edition, and then issued them in New York?the suppressed edition of 1865 and that issued by Appleton in New York in 1866 are identical" (Williams)."At first it was agreed to sell the condemned printing as waste-paper, but eventually there came an opportunity for the original unbound sheets to be sold off to an overseas publishing house who had requested to buy up two thousand copies for distribution in America. Both Tenniel and Dodgson gave their consent to this proposal, and thus 1,952 copies (of the original 2,000 copy print run) were sold to the firm David Appleton & Co.; the title pages were redone with a New York imprint dated 1866, the sheets were machine-folded and put into cloth bindings with Appleton's name on the lower spine. About this Item: New York: D. Appleton, 1866, 1866. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION, second (i.e., American) issue, comprising sheets of the suppressed 1865 printing of Alice with new title-page. 42 illustrations by John Tenniel. Original red cloth. Spine very slightly darkened, very minor wear to spine ends, small spot on back cover, hinges tender. A handsome copy. Half morocco case. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is the most frequently quoted book in the world, after the Bible and the works of Shakespeare. Alice has been translated into more than 150 languages and gone through many hundreds of editions and countless stage and screen adaptations. “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its hardly less famous sequel Through the Looking Glass (1872), although ostensibly written for children are unique among ‘juveniles’ in appealing equally if not more strongly to adults. Written by an Oxford don, a clergyman, and a professional mathematician, they abound in characters—the White Knight, the Red Queen, the Mad Hatter, Humpty Dumpty—who are part of everybody’s mental furniture. And the philosophic profundity of scores, if not hundreds, of these characters’ observations, long household words wherever English is spoken, gains mightily from the delicious fantasy of their setting” (PMM). On July 4, 1862, the Rev. Charles Dodgson (“Lewis Carroll”) first told the story of Alice while on a river expedition with a fellow Oxford don and the three Liddell sisters, Alice, Edith, and Lorinda. The story’s namesake, Alice, asked for a written version of the tale, and Dodgson gave it to her for Christmas 1864. On seeing that manuscript, “Alice’s Adventures Underground,” friends encouraged him to expand the story into a book. In a letter to a friend Dodgson joked that the title might be taken to mean “instruction about mines,” and suggested the alternatives “Alice among the elves/goblins” or “Alice’s hour/doings/adventures in elf-land/wonderland.” “This second issue comprises those copies of the first edition still unbound when Lewis Carroll decided in July 1865 to cancel the edition. In 1866 the copies on hand were sold to Appleton and [1000] new title-pages were printed at Oxford, replacing the originals. The binding was evidently done in England, duplicating that for the first issue except in the substitution of Appleton’s name for Macmillan at the foot of the spine and in the omission of a binder’s ticket. Textually the Appleton issue agrees with the Macmillan 1865, the only difference being the cancel title-page” (Robert N. Taylor, Lewis Carroll at Texas: The Warren Weaver Collection). This is a very handsome copy of a beloved and much-read book, far superior to the worn and repaired copies usually encountered. Seller Inventory # ABE-1508876266865
