About this Item: Lee and Shepard, Boston / Lee, Shepard, and Dillingham, 1872. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First American edition ('wade' for 'wabe' on p. 21). Professionally rebacked with original backstrip laid down (some loss from edges), new end sheets. Boards lightly rubbed and soiled, pencil name and year ('R.P. Blake 1880') on front flyleaf, a number of illustrations colored with pencil by a young reader, some quite nicely done. 1872 Hard Cover. x, [1]-224 pp. 8vo. The sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, with fifty illustrations by John Tenniel. This first American edition was released with both red and green cloth (no priority) in the same year as the Macmillan edition printed in London, and contains the same typo in the Jabberwocky's poem. Our research indicates that the U.S. edition appears less frequently both in the trade and at auction than its British equivalent. Carroll's books about Alice are among the most collected works in modern literature, and have both inspired a number of animated and live actions films (most recently those directed by Tim Burton and featuring Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Mia. About this Item: Lee and Shepard, Boston, 1869. First edition printed in America of the author's classic work. Octavo, original red cloth, all edges gilt, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, triple gilt ruled to the front and rear panels. Illustrated by John Tenniel, text illustrated. In near fine condition, bookplates. An exceptional example. Alice's Adventures were "born on a golden afternoon" in July 1862, when the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) took the three small daughters of Dean Liddell of Christ Church on a boating trip up the Isis. Carroll delighted the three children by relating Alice's adventures, and eventually promised his favorite among the three, Alice Liddell, to write the story down for her. Through the Looking-Glass can be seen as a mirror image of the Alice's Adventures. For example, the latter begins outdoors in the warmth of May 4 and uses the imagery of playing cards, while the former begins indoors on a snowy, cold November 4 and uses the imagery of chess. "The two Alice books completed the reinstatement of the imagination, so long disapproved of by the opponents of fairy stories, to its proper place. ‘Alice is, in a word, a book of that extremely rare kind which will belong to all the generations to come until the language becomes obsolete’" (Carpenter & Prichard, 102). About this Item: LEE AND SHEPARD, BOSTON, 1869. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First US Edition, First Printing A handsome rare example of the first American edition, first printing in beautiful condition. (after the very scarce first American edition made from sheets given to Appleton from the suppressed 1865 British edition, of which very few survived) The beautiful book has burgundy cloth boards in great condition with a gilt image to the front of Alice and faded gilt titles to the spine. The book has benefited from being rebacked with all the original materials intact, which has made for a very strong tight binding. The scarce slightly nicked original dark brown coated end papers are present with no owner names and no bookstore stamps. Inscription to the first blank internal page. The book has no edgewear, and entire outer page block still maintains the original bright gilt application. All the pages are present with some light handling marks, and a few nicks or an occasional tiny scant foxing mark. Three pages have the page numbers marked out in pencil (page 153, 154, 155). Please see the many detailed images. No dust jacket. A very handsome example of this classic, fragile, highly collectible book at a great price for this title in the original binding with original end papers present. Presents well on the shelf. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for other rare titles. Seller Inventory # 001012

About this Item: D. Appleton and Co. / Lee, Shepard and Dillingham, New York, 1872. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First American edition. 2 volumes. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1866, Appleton) and Through the Looking-Glass (1872, Lee, Shepard), both First American editions published in New York. Freshly bound in full morocco with title label and pictorial cut out under plastic. Both with new marbled endpapers. Original half-title present in Adventures only. Minor fading to the contents. Old ownership signature on half-title of Adventures and title page of Looking Glass.
