Item Description: The Limited Editions Club / Printed at The Anthoensen Press, [New York], 1984. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. LeWitt, Sol (illustrator). Limited Edition. No. 1300 of 1500, 8vo - over 7.75" - 9.75" tall, 341 p., signed by illustrator. Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges exerted a strong influence on the direction of literary fiction through his genre-bending metafictions, essays, and poetry. Borges was a founder, and principal practitioner, of postmodernist literature, a movement in which literature distances itself from life situations in favor of reflection on the creative process and critical self-examination. Anthony Kerrigan, who wrote the introduction to this version, wrote, "The work of Jorge Luis Borges is a species of international literary metaphor. He knowledgeably makes a transfer of inherited meanings from Spanish and English, French and German, and sums up a series of analogies, of confrontations, of appositions in other nations' literatures. His Argentinians act out Parisian dramas, his Central European Jews are wise in the ways of the Amazon, his Babylonians are fluent in the paradigms of Babel." (N. B. info from The Poetry Foundation and the Introduction by Kerrigan). ***ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR: Sol LeWitt earned a place in the history of art for his leading role in the Conceptual movement. His belief in the artist as a generator of ideas was instrumental in the transition from the modern to the postmodern era. Conceptual art, expounded by LeWitt as an intellectual, pragmatic act, added a new dimension to the artist's role that was distinctly separate from the romantic nature of Abstract Expressionism. LeWitt's work ranged from sculpture, painting, and drawing to almost exclusively conceptual pieces that existed only as ideas or elements of the artistic process itself (Info from The Art Story web site). ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in full black cowhide; blindstamped lettering on the spine and a large rectangle on the cover; set in linotype Cloister Bold on Mohawk wove paper; illustrated by Sol LeWitt with silk-screens on Somerset Satin paper; pagination: (i) - xxxii, (1) - 306, blanks (307, 308), colophon (309); 8" tall; slipcase is bound in black paper. ***CONDITION: Book is in fine condition with no markings or wear, there is slight foxing to the textblock edges; slipcase is in fine condition, strong and sturdy with some very minor shelf wear to sides and bottom. ***CITATION: LEC no. 541. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
