Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Limited Edition. One of (approx.) 20 special copies produced in 1981. Size of binding: 12 x 13 ¼, 392+pp. 337 plates; mainly color, some are fold-outs; with chronology, bibliography, etc. The text block of the 1981 Barbara Rose book on Liberman, as published by Abbeville Press. A small number of unnumbered copies (we have been informed that only 20 were produced), which were specially bound in white artist s canvas, which was then painted & signed by Russian-born Modernist, Alexander Liberman. As part of this presentation, Liberman has produced an original painting on the front & back covers & painted his signature: Liberman in large red letters on the spine. This also serves as the title of the book when displayed. The front cover painting features a large, squared-off capital letter "A" form in thick-lined, black calligraphic brush strokes (this measures: 10 x 11 ), this is combined with 5 vertical & parallel stripes of a thinner paint, to the left, in shades of lavender, pink, blue, yellow & light brown; other curved or straight lines of black paint run across, or around the central "A" form; the back features two blue or yellow bands & other black curved or straight lines. An original, signed Alexander Liberman painting, in a specially constructed, thick plexiglass (plastic), standing, sculptural display case; this case is in two parts: the base (17 1/4 x 7 1/2"), which includes a vertical inner bar on the left, to hold the book in place & a square (13 x 13 3/4") case which slips downwards over the book. The back of the case shows a 3 ½ in. internal crack or flaw in the plastic. Book is in fine condition. Said to be part of a series of other similar artists books produced by Abbeville Press. Rare item. Weight: 15 lbs. Postage may be extra on this item. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. LIBERMAN, Alexander Inscribed (on half-title page) to Kitty Carlisle Hart- With admiration, friendship, and affection Alexander [293] pp. Random House 1988 Revised Edition 12 3/8" x 9 3/8" Alexander Semeonovitch Liberman (September 4, 1912 November 19, 1999) was a Ukrainian-American magazine editor, publisher, painter, photographer, and sculptor. He held senior artistic positions during his 32 years at Condé Nast Publications. First published in 1960, the book was immediately recognized as one of the most original books on art ever published - a record of Author's visits to the studios of many of the great painters and sculptors who lived in France during the 20th century. Drawing on his profound understanding of modern art, his friendship with its greatest European masters, and his skill as a photographer, Liberman has constructed visual and verbal mediation on art and the act of creation; an invaluable source-book for everyone interested in the history of modern art. Now he has returned to his classic work, to refresh it with a completely new design, additional text and many more photographs of the artists and their surroundings, as well as reproductions of their works. Here are his pilgrimages to the studios of Cézanne, Monet, Renoir, Bonnard and Kandinsky; his lively, probing, revealing conversations with Matisse, Braque, Giacometti and many others; and his visits to artists not included in the 1st edition - Balthus and Sonia Delaunay. Continuing his long acquaintance with Picasso, Liberman shows us the artist in the 1960s, in his last studio at Mougins - still vigorous and productive, still endowed with the curiosity, energy and genius that lead the Author to rank him as the greatest artist of the 20th century. And, as Liberman comments knowledgeably in words and images on the artists' working methods, subjects and idiosyncrasies of technique, he uses the visible elements of their art and lives to elucidate the deep sources of their inspiration and greatness: light, landscapes, intellectual passion, profound human relationships. Virtually every section of the book has been enhanced with photographs not used earlier. Preserving all the empathy and erudition that gave the original book its special charm and enduring value, this revised edition now offers us a new, more comprehensive, more colourful visit to The Artist in his Studio. With 216 illustrations, 161 in colour & 55 duotone. Inscribed by Author(s).

His work serves as an example of excellent photography even today. Moments Preserved is his first publication. Irving Penn said befittingly of his work, "[s]ensitive people faced with the prospect of a camera portrait put on a face they think is one they would like to show the world. Very often what lies behind the facade is rare and more wonderful than the subject knows or dares to believe" His photography is held at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, both of which also hold collections of personal materials that relate to Penn's career.
