Octavo (21 cm); xv, [5], 21-234 pp.; dust jacket. Light-colored cloth stamped in burgundy. A Near Fine copy with board edges slightly darkened in a Very Good+, unclipped ($3.00) dust jacket. Some light rubbing and soiling; owner's inscription to front endpaper, else clean throughout. A harrowing collection of short stories from the Greek writer, Lilika Nakos, which depicts the deprivations suffered by Greek children during the occupation. It was allegedly the impact of these stories, smuggled out of Greece and published in France, that was responsible for the first shipments of milk by the International Red Cross (Tannen, 7). Evocative jacket design by Anne Edwards Long; translated from the French by Allan Ross MacDougall; and with an introduction by Bessie Breuer.
