About this Item: Macmillan London Ltd., 1973. Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. b/w Photos (illustrator). First Edition. First edition. Lillian Diana Gish (October 14, 1893 February 27, 1993), was an American stage, screen and television actress whose film acting career spanned 75 years, from 1912 to 1987. She was a prominent film star of the 1910s and 1920s, particularly associated with the films of director D.W. Griffith, including her leading role in Griffith's seminal Birth of a Nation (1915). Her sound-era film appearances were sporadic, but included a memorable role in the 1955 cult thriller Night of the Hunter. She did considerable television work from the early 1950s into the 1980s, and closed her career playing opposite Bette Davis in the 1987 film The Whales of August. The American Film Institute (AFI) named Gish 17th among the greatest female stars of all time.[1] She was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1971, and in 1984 she received an AFI Life Achievement Award. About this Item: Charles Scribner's Sons, NY, 1973. Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: G. First Edition; 1st Printing (A). DJ has some tears, now protected in mylar protective sleeve. Spine has slight wear on top edge, text is clean and unmarked. This book has stunning photos of this silent screen era family. Hardcover: 312 pages, Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1st edition (1973) Language: English, ISBN-10: 068413571X, ISBN-13: 978-0684135717, Product Dimensions: 12 x 9 x 1.3 inches, Shipping Weight: 3.4 pounds; Lillian and Dorothy Gish were American stage, screen and television actresses whose film acting career spanned 75 years, from 1912 to 1987. The Gish sisters were particularly associated with the films of director D. W. Griffith. Each sister had her own signature style: Dorothy was suited more to comedies, while Lillian's intense acting style made her perfect for melodramatic tragedies and historical set pieces, an attribute which led to her position as D. W. Griffith's star player. The Gish's prominence within the Biograph company continued to rise throughout the 1910s, as did their global reputation as two of silent cinema's greatest actresses. This sumptuous book records in pictures two extraordinary careers in Films and on the stage. As Brooks Atkinson has said, the acting careers of Dorothy and Lillian Gish moved through the whole cycle of American show business, from road companies to television. They began as child actresses in the First decade of this century. Lillian appeared in her first silent picture in 1912-and made her most recent Elm in 1967. The sisters played in close to two hundred movies, and in sixty-odd stage productions. The classic silent Elms directed by D. W. Griffith established the reputations of Dorothy and Lillian Gish: together or individually they starred in The Birth of a Nation, Broken Blossoms, Nell Gwyn, Hearts of the World, and Orphans of the Storm. Their remarkable record of performance carried on to Elms like Duel in the Sun, The Cardinal, and The Comedians. On the stage they appeared in plays by T. S. Eliot, Congreve, Noel Coward, Shakespeare, Robert Anderson, Shaw, O¿Gasey, and Lindsay and Crouse. In 1930 Lillian Gish returned to Broadway in Chekhov¿s Uncle Vanya; in 1973 she played in Mike Nichol¿s revival of Uncle Vanya. ; 12 X 9 X 1.30 inches; 312 pages. Seller Inventory # 40040
