About this Item: New Bharatiya Book Corporation, 2012. Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Apsarases as an entity have always been enticing, intriguing and fascinating to the student of the Sanskrit. They form a beautiful backdrop of most of the Vedic, post-Vedic and Classical Sanskrit literature where the players are major gods, holy sagas, demons and mortal heroes. Occasionally, the heavenly beauties come to the forefront to play a significant role in the story. After browsing through the ancient Sanskrit literature, it was necessary to carry out an in-depth study of the Apsarases to put them in a proper perspective. The Vedic Scriptures, the Vedangas, the Puranas, the Epics and the Classical Sanskrit literature form my principle sources. As the scriptures of Buddhism and Jainism belong to the period contemporary with that of the Classical Sanskrit literature, search for the references to Apsarases was also made therein, and some examples were cited. Part 1 takes a review of the earliest literary works available for study. Part 2 deals with hard documentary evidence in the ancient literature giving concrete information about the Apsarases as a species. These two parts elucidate the 'raison d' entre' of the heavenly nymphs and start defining their place in the entire panarama of the universe as envisioned by the ancient seers and thinkers. Part 3 presents some interesting information about the Apsarases, which does not originate in thr ancient Sanskrit literature, but is complementary for the development of the Apsara motif. Lastly, Part 4 presents my own interpretation of the concept of Apsaras and its development over the millennia. Seller Inventory # NBBC-9788183151900
