The catalogue for the school, founded in 1933 by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine, along with Edward M.M. Warburg and Vladimir Dimitriew. The first classes began January 1934. Listed are its accomplishments for the period of 1934-1944, the administration, etc.: Lincoln Kirstein (President/Director), George Balanchine (Chairman of Faculty), Eugenie Ouroussow (Exec. Secretary), and Natalie Molostwoff (Secretary). Kirstein offers the introductory essay, writing from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, in his position as an Engineer with the armed forces. Lists policies and the program, followed by a chronological list of productions for the 10-year period which originated at the school. Includes head shots of the administration and faculty, with brief bios; artistic photos of principal dancers with signed inscriptions (not original), and two pages of photos of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Some of the dancers included are Martha Graham, Tamara Toumanova, Gisella Caccialanza, Paul Draper, Alexandra Danilova, Andre Eglevsky, and Vera Zorina, with others. Photos of conductors Leopold Stokowski and Igor Stravinsky also appear. A wonderful bit of American ballet history/memorabilia. The bottom left corner of the postcard is creased. The bottom right corner is very lightly creased. Good. Though not indicated [the address section of the card is left blank], Kirstein is writing to his psychotherapist Arthur Foxe, M.D.:"Hope you had a good summer and vacation and there are new poems and interesting patients." Psychiatrist and criminology expert Dr. Arthur N. Foxe was a collector of skating books and memorabilia and the postcard Kirstein has chosen to send him depicts Henry Raeburn's famous painting "The Rev. Robert Walker Skating".Lincoln Kirstein [1907-1996] was an American impresario, poet, art connoisseur, philanthropist and cultural figure in New York City, noted especially as co-founder of the New York City Ballet.
