About this Item: Harcourt, Brace and Co., New York, 1938. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Red cloth, spine panel lettered and front cover airplane device in gilt. Text block edges a bit dulled by age, otherwise essentially as issued, though lacking dust jacket. Stated first edition. xii,275 pp., illus. w/ maps. Signed on half-title "For The Morgans / Anne," and while the signature bears a passing resemblance to that of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, who frequently inscribed copies to personal friends simply as "Anne," we have doubts that this example is genuine. More often than not, Listen! the Wind was inscribed by both Lindberghs, given that Charles executed the map illustrations, and this example is written on a slant, rather than the author's typical horizontal inscription. However, the inscription is intriguing insofar as it is "For the Morgans," which would most likely be Anne's sister Constance and her husband, Aubrey Morgan, who had married in 1937 (the year before publication), three years after the death of Aubrey's first wife, Elisabeth, who was also Anne and Con's older sister. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Inscribed by Author(s). Book. Seller Inventory # 042171

About this Item: Franklin Library, Franklin Center, Penn, 1982. Hardcover. Condition: vg. Limited First edition. Striking collection of ten titles from the Franklin Library Limited First Edition series: - 1) Wallace Stegner: The Spectator Bird (1976). Quarto. [14], 267, [1]pp. Original gilt stamped leather, with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. All edges gilt. Moire endpapers. Ribbon marker. Joe Allston is a retired literary agent who is, in his own words, "just killing time until time gets around to killing me." His parents and his only son are long dead, leaving him with neither ancestors nor descendants, tradition nor ties. His job, trafficking the talent of others, had not been his choice. He passes through life as a spectator. A postcard from a friend causes Allston to return to the journals of a trip he had taken years before, a journey to his mother's birthplace, where he'd sought a link with the past. The memories of that trip, both grotesque and poignant, move through layers of time and meaning, and reveal that Joe Allston isn't quite spectator enough. Binding and interior in fine condition. - 2) Robert Penn Warren: Selected Poems, 1923-1975 (1976). Quarto. XXI, [1] 294pp. Original gilt stamped leather, with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. All edges gilt. Moire endpapers. Ribbon marker. Robert Penn Warren's "Selected Poems" is more broadly representative of Warren's poetry than any previous such gartering. More than two hundred poems from every phase grace the volume, a vehicle ideal for sampling or soaking in the finest of Warren's rich output. At the heart of Warren's poetry is a celebration of man's intellect and imagination, his integral place within nature, and his relationship to time and the past; ultimately, joy coexists with the knowledge of life's many mysteries, including its tragedies. Selected Poems, a generous survey and a convenient compendium, is the shining portal to this greatly gifted poet. Illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon. Binding and interior in fine condition. - 3) Vance Bourjailly: A Game Men Play (1980). Quarto. [12], 363, [1]pp. Original gilt stamped leather, with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. All edges gilt. Moire endpapers. Ribbon marker. Publisher's loose documentation about the book laid in. A penetrating volume telling the story of a double murder leading to an IRA plot against the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Illustrated by Mitchell Hooks. Binding and interior in fine condition. - 4) Anne Morrow Lindbergh: War Within and Without: Diaries and Letters, 1939-1944 (1980). Quarto. [18], 454pp. Original gilt stamped leather, with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. All edges gilt. Moire endpapers. Ribbon marker. Publisher's loose documentation about the book laid in. A captivating account of the Lindberghs' wartime years, but most significantly the story of a bond between two extraordinary people. Introduction by the Author. Includes numerous b/w photographic reproductions. Binding and interior in fine condition. - 5) Joanne Greenberg: A Season of Delight (1981). Quarto. [12], 238pp. Original gilt stamped leather, with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. All edges gilt. Moire endpapers. Ribbon marker. Publisher's loose documentation about the book laid in. When Grace Dowben, the middle-aged mother of two estranged children, meets Ben Sloan, the new Jewish fellow-member of a local volunteer fire and rescue squad, their camaraderie grows into love. Illustrated by James Campbell. Binding and interior in fine condition. - 6) James M. Cain: The Baby in the Icebox and Other Short Fiction (1981). [12], 305, [1]pp. Quarto. Original gilt stamped leather, with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. All edges gilt. Moire endpapers. Ribbon marker. Two murderers, the head of their victim, and a frozen creek. Lucky, the hobo, concocts the perfect alibi. The tiger in the kitchen, the baby in the icebox. These are the elements of three stories highlighted by the streamlined prose, concise plots, and unique voice that also distinguish James M. Cain's classic novels Double Indemnity and The P.
