About this Item: Unversity of Nebreska Press, Lincoln Nebraska and London, 1989. Hard Back. Condition: Near Fine. Lindlof, Ed - Dust Jacket (illustrator). Second Printing. 302 pages Indexed with Bibliography. White boards with gold spne lettering. Lincoln County Museum Store label on front endpaper. Tight book with three corners lightly bumped. No other marks or stamps and interior text pages are flawless. This book examines the career of the young outlaw whose life and death were an expression of the violence prevalent on the American frontier. From his shrouded origins in New York to the escalating criminal career that ended when lawman Pat Garrett surprised him with a bullet. Noteworthy for its massive research, recontruction of several gun battles, and Utley's refusal to be suckered in the Kid-as-Hero myth. Whatever his name or alias at the moment- Henry McCarty, Henry Antrim, Kid Antrim, Billy Bonney -- people always called him the Kid. Not until his final months did anyone call him Billy the Kid. Newspapers pictured him as a king of outlaws; and his highly publicized capture, trial, escape, and end fixed his image in the public mind for all time. He was only 21 when a bullet from Sheriff Pat Garrett's six-shooter killed him on July 14, 1881. Within a year Billy the Kid became the subject of five dime-novel biographies as well as Garrett's ghost-written account, and that was just the beginning. Robert M. Utley does what countless books, movies, television shows, musical compositions, and paintings have failed to do: he successfully strips off the veneer of legendry to expose the reality of Billy the Kid. Using previously untapped sources, he presents an engrossing story -- the most complete and accurate ever of a youthful hoodlum and sometime killer who found his calling in New Mexico's bloody power struggle known as the Lincoln County War. In unmasking the legend Utley also tells us much about our heritage of frontier vigilantism and violence. Contents in 18 Chapters: The Kid, the Adolescent The Outlaw, The Ranch Hand, The Avenger, The Assassin, The Shootout, The Warrior, The Fire, The Drifter, The Bargain, The Rustler, The Celebrity, The Capture, The Sentence, The Escape, The Execution, and the Legend. Plus Note and Sources. Illustrated with 31 photos and drawings plus five maps. Size: 5 1/2" X 9 1/2". Seller Inventory # 15098
