About this Item: -1943, 1939. 6 March 1939; on Living Marxism letterhead. A4, 1 p. Regarding 'Death is not Enough': 'Though you really want to start where Marx left off you are not able to bring your ideas to a realistic ground as far as I can see. What you bring forward is a mixture of Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Spengler, Freud and others; but like those people you also fail to show any other than an illusionary solution. The mind escapes out of despair for the greatness and ugliness of the actual job which should be done. Essentially you are only religious, and how far the flight of your fantasie may go, as it remains mere ideology, you are really a few hundred years behind Marx. You have only changed your religion, bent it to your individual taste, but it is still religion. [.]'- 22 July 1939; on Living Marxism letterhead. A4, 1 p. MF's response to his last letter made him 'very happy'. 'Too often it happened to me that I lost friends and acquaintances because I did not try to be pleasant in matters of thought and action.'- 12 November 1940; on Living Marxism letterhead. A4, 1 p. He is afraid that the review of Death is not Enough in Living Marxism 'really did not [do] justice' to it. Asks if MF can 'do an article for L.M. dealing with the contemporary Mexican scene'.- 5 December 1940; Chicago. A4, 2 pp.- 4 February 1941; Chicago. A4, 1 p.- 31 May 1941; Chicago. A4, 1 p. He hopes to be able to review the second volume of Hamlet himself, 'not only to be able to keep the book, but because I want to show my appreciation'.- 12 June 1941; Chicago. A4, 2 pp. He has received the copy of Hamlet. '[.] I have decided to review it myself. However, I will ask Phillip Rahv if he would be interested in reviewing it for some other magazine, possibly Partisan Review, or wherever he thinks best. [.] Right now I only want to say that the book means quite a lot to me.'- 24 June 1941; Chicago. A4, 2 pp. Begins: 'I am afraid that what I have to say about Hamlet will not please you at all. I enclose the copy of my review for L.M. If you do not wish it to appear I will not publish it. Otherwise it will go in the forthcoming issue. You know that I enjoy your writings, as well as Miller's. To be honest, I had to say what I did say.'- 14 July 1941; Chicago. A4, 1 p. '[.] I am not able to write differently than I think. But that what you call sincerity lost me many friends. The general run of people is easily hurt, but the vanity of some exceptional people is really frightening. [.] being a Marxist, the Hegelian basis of your thinking is both to me an inspiration and an invitation to object. [.]'- 30 July 1941; Chicago. ALS. A4, 1 p.- 17 September 1941; Chicago. A4, 1 p.- 15 September 1943; Chicago. A4, 1p. Begins: 'your letter was a great surprise. It is so long since I heard from you last. About a year ago I asked Henry Miller about you, but he had no information either.'- 15 October 1943; Chicago. A5, 1 p. He has received the first volume of Hamlet. 'I liked the additional parts in it though I do not agree with their content. [.] I am working in a factory and at the same time try to get out another issue of New Essays. [.]'With copy of TL from MF to Mattick (1941): 'Your approach is realistic; mine is idealistic - and Aristotle to Hegel and Marx. But the approach is grounded in the dialectical method, the only one, it seems to me, that can possibly have any real validity. Point of view is determined entirely by the complexion of the method, realistic (dynamic) or idealistic (static).'. Seller Inventory # 8798
