About this Item: Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, 2008. Hardcover. Condition: New. First. 314pp. China as we know is a great civilization and Xuanzangs (who is popularly known as Hsuan-tsang) visit to India was a great event. The noted Chinese traveller and Buddhist pilgrim, Xuanzang, reached India in AD 630, having undertaken arduous journey across Central Asia. A Chinese emperor called him the jewel of the empire. Nearly fourteen years of his life (from AD 630 to AD 644) were spent visiting Buddhist temples and monasteries, cities and places of interest in the Indian subcontinent. He was a keen observer of men and affairs. Apart from being a devout monk, he has left behind a fascinating and authentic account of Indias history, geography, economy, and society of the times when King Harsha (AD 606-47) ruled over northern India. This volume contains articles on the life and achievement of Xuanzang. Dharmamaster Xuanzang came to India particularly in search of Buddhist texts which were not available in China. He studied his favourite text Yogacarabhumisastra under the famous teacher Shilabhadra of Nalanda. He was a great recorder of historical sites of the Silk Route. His description of the Silk Route countries in Afghanistan and Gandhara are valuable for the political and cultural history of these lands. The studv of Bamiyan monasteries and colossal Buddhas have inspired Art historians to make a thorough study of the Cultural history of Afghanistan. The articles in this present volume show, through wide range of studies, not only Xuanzangs love and knowledge of Buddhism, but only an account of various countries and their cultural heritage. About this Item: Aditya Prakashan, New Delhi, 2011. Hardcover. Condition: New. First edition. This catalogue of Sanskrit manuscripts in the National Archives of India, lists codices which were transferred from the personal library of H.H. the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir to the Archives when the State acceded to India. They contain unknown texts as well as ancient versions of known texts in the Sharada script. Sharada manuscripts were insulated in the inaccessible valley of Kashmir and thus they have preserved striking original readings. The names of the three Classical cities of Rome, Alexandria and Antioch have survived in the Sharada mss of the Sabhaparva of the Mahabharata. These names have been garbled in all other versions spread over several hundred manuscripts. This royal collection encompasses Vedic texts, smrti, dharmasastra, itihasa, purana, philosophy, grammar, lexicography, drama, poetry, poetics, astrology, ritual, medicine, polity, tantras, martial arts, etc. It will open up rich source materials to the academic world for the first time. Contents: Foreword by Karan Singh. 1. From the desk of the Director General of the aArchives. 2. Preface by Prof. Lokesh Chandra. 3. Introduction. 4. Summaries of important manuscripts. 5. About this Item: Aditya Prakashan, New Delhi, 1999. Hardcover. Condition: New. Karanda-vyuha is a major sutra devoted to Avalokitesvara who embodies the fundamental aspect of Buddhism: karuna (compassion), whence he is also called Mahakarunika `The Great Compassionate One`. This supernal virtue is expressed in his untiring activity to Help all beings in extreme suffering, as well as his readiness to protect them from Natural calamities and social catastrophes. It is the sutra which proclaims the six-syllabled mantra Om mani-padme hum. It was translated into Chinese as early as AD 270 by Dharmaraksa of Tun-huang, and again by Gunabhadra between 435-443. It was rendered into Tibetan by Jinamitra, Danasila and Ye.ses.sde in the eighth century. It has been held in great reverence in the Buddhist World as it was revealed to Emperor Asoka by his preceptor Upagupta, as a Model for the welfare of sentient beings. Emperor Asoka was blessed by the Gods (devanampriyah) and in turn he promoted the interests of his people (priyadarsi). The Sanskrit text of the Karanda-vyuha is known in three versions : (i) the vulgate version in Nepalese manuscripts (ii) the prose version in Gilgit manuscripts of the early seventh century, and (iii) the metrical version The last version has been published in this Edition from Nepalese manuscripts for the first time. It has been the basis of the Buddhist studies of B.H. Hodgson as early as 1828, and thereby it has conditioned the understanding of Buddhist thought as well as of Artistic traditions. Inspite of its importance, it has never been published. This edition of the Original Sanskrit text will enable the Academic world to understand the foundations of modern Scientific Study of the literary, philosophic and artistic perceptions of Buddhism. The Sanskrit text is preceded by an analysis of the work in the introduction. The twenty chapters of the Karanda-vyuha enable us to comprehend the immense popularity of Avalokitesvara in Mahayana Buddhism in China, Korea, Japan, Tibet and Mongolia, besides his prevalence in Southeast Asian Countries like Srilanka, Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia in Ancient times. It is a sine qua non text for Buddhist scholars as well as for historians of Asian art. Printed Pages: 311. Seller Inventory # 14489
