Joseph Blount Cheshire was Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina for nearly forty years. He was a young boy when the Civil War started, and he lived until 1932. During his episcopate he established new missions and schools, put older ones on a firm foundation, and was known and loved throughout his native state as a man of great personal charm and ability. He had an active hand in establishing the first hospital for Blacks in North Carolina, and was one of the earliest Episcopalians to extend his missionary work among the Blacks of North Caroline.
