About this Item: 1922. First Edition. LASARD, Lou-Lou Albert. Montmartre. [Potsdam]: Kiepenheuer, circa 1925. Large oblong folio (24 by 19 inches), 12 lithographs, matted and loose as issued in publisher's half cloth portfolio with lithographed boards. $12,500.Rare first edition of this lovely portfolio of large original lithographs of Montmartre society in the 1920s, each one matted and signed in pencil by the artist, Lou-Lou Albert Lasard.Lou-Lou Albert Lasard was an integral member of the circle of artists known as "Der Blaue Reiter," founded in Berlin by a number of Russian emigrants, including Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, Marianne von Werefkin, and native German artists, such as Franz Marc, August Macke and Gabriele Münter. From 1914-16 she was linked romantically with Rainer Maria Rilke. In 1928, she returned to Paris and was part of the Montparnasse art society, where she befriended Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, and Robert Delaunay. Lasard's love for Paris and the world of variety shows is highlighted in the 12 lithographs of this exquisite portfolio. In 1925 Lasard was featured in an acclaimed exhibition in the Berlin branch of the noted Galerie Alfred Flechtheim, and the prints in this portfolio were issued in a very limited number to accompany that exhibit. In May, 1940, she and her daughter were interned by the Nazis at the Gurs concentration camp in southwestern France, but were later released. Some wear to flaps of original portfolio. Lithographs clean and fine, with bold signatures. A lovely copy in extremely good condition, rare and most desirable complete. Seller Inventory # 107427

About this Item: [Japan, 1934. Condition: Fine. Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Presented to Lou Gehrig from the Children of Japan. Gehrig barnstormed around Japan in 1934, joined by Babe Ruth, his manager Connie Mack and a dozen other players. Gehrig brought his wife Eleanor, intending the trip to be the first leg of their delayed honeymoon. Gehrig and Ruth were no longer on speaking terms, and an encounter between Eleanor and Ruth involving prodigious amounts of champagne and caviar in the slugger's cabin further cemented the estrangement. The present letter, written in Japanese and presented to Gehrig from "the children of Japan," is a touching note offering good wishes to Gehrig's mother, with whom he was very close.Translation of the presentation letter:Dear Mr. Gehrig: "I am very happy to learn that you are a good filial son to your Mom. I hear that fact from someone and read about it in a magazine. I like and respect my own Mother very much. So, I would like to give something from Japan to your Mom. I was thinking and thinking, but I could not know what was a good and appropriate gift. After much consideration and thought, I decided it might be good to send your Mom the Nippon Shichi Fukujin or Japan's Seven Lucky Gods. It is close to Christmas - your country. So these Seven Lucky Gods will bring many happinesses to your Mom. This is really a 'tsumaranai mono,' not-so-fine a thing, a trifling thing of no major importance whatsoever. I wish some Japanese person in the US to explain to you about the Seven Lucky Gods. I hope you and your Mom will have a good fortune. I ask the Seven Lucky Gods to bring this gift to you. I am afraid the gift for your Mom is not so fine. Japanese children said to you, Mr. Gehrig, 'yoroshiku' to say 'hello' to you and your Mom. For a long time you have been active and working hard. Please come to Japan again. With your Mom! To have sightseeing. The children of Japan. November."[With:] 3 books on Japanese culture and tourism from Gehrig's library. From the collection of Ruth Martin Quick, a former girlfriend of Gehrig who later became a very close friend of Gehrig's mother, Christina. The collection included Gehrig's jersey worn on the 1934 Japan trip (which sold for over $500,000 at auction in 2011), a signed baseball, and other memorabilia. Provenance: Jeffrey Quick of Whippany, N.J., son of Ruth Martin Quick, a friend of Lou Gehrig Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Seller Inventory # 300422

About this Item: Loujon Press, New Orleans, 1963. Original wraps. Condition: Near Fine. INSCRIBED BY CHARLES BUKOWSKI on the front pink tissue-guard (to fellow writer Dan Georgakas). A very sharp copy to boot of the 3rd issue (of only 4 all told) of this highly-influential small press poetry magazine. Published by the formidable Loujon Press of New Orleans (the imprint of John and Gypsy Lou Webb), Outsider #3 is hand-printed and features a long "section dedicated to the poet Charles Bukowski, selected by the editors as deservedly the most inevitable recipient of The Outsider's first annual 'outsider-of-the-year' award (1962)". Beyond this tribute, the Webbs have also given Bukowski this issue's cover, with a wonderful, gritty black-and-white photo of the poet just below a cryptic painting of Gypsy Lou Webb (by David Pallock). Apart from Bukowski, this issue also includes work by Kenneth Patchen, Henry Miller, William Burroughs, Gary Snyder, Robert Creeley, Harold Norse, et al. Solid and Near Fine in its pictorial wrappers, with just a bit of tanning at the preliminaries. Bukowski of course would go on to do 2 highly-regarded signed/limiteds for John and Gypsy Lou Webb in the the early to mid 60s ("It Catches My Heart in Its Hands" and "Crucifix in a Deathhand") but his signature, certainly not scarce in itself, is surprisingly uncommon in this incarnation.
