Item Description: 1922. First Edition. LASARD, Lou-Lou Albert. Montmartre. [Potsdam]: Kiepenheuer, circa 1925. Large oblong folio (24 by 19 inches), 12 lithographs, matted and loose as issued in publisher's half cloth portfolio with lithographed boards. $12,500.Rare first edition of this lovely portfolio of large original lithographs of Montmartre society in the 1920s, each one matted and signed in pencil by the artist, Lou-Lou Albert Lasard.Lou-Lou Albert Lasard was an integral member of the circle of artists known as "Der Blaue Reiter," founded in Berlin by a number of Russian emigrants, including Wassily Kandinsky, Alexej von Jawlensky, Marianne von Werefkin, and native German artists, such as Franz Marc, August Macke and Gabriele Münter. From 1914-16 she was linked romantically with Rainer Maria Rilke. In 1928, she returned to Paris and was part of the Montparnasse art society, where she befriended Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, and Robert Delaunay. Lasard's love for Paris and the world of variety shows is highlighted in the 12 lithographs of this exquisite portfolio. In 1925 Lasard was featured in an acclaimed exhibition in the important Berlin art gallery, the Galerie Alfred Flechtheim, and the prints in this portfolio were issued in a very limited number to accompany that exhibit. In May, 1940, she and her daughter were interned by the Nazis at the Gurs concentration camp in southwestern France, but were later released. Some wear to flaps of original portfolio. Lithographs clean and fine, with bold signatures. A lovely copy in extremely good condition, rare and most desirable complete. Bookseller Inventory # 107427

Item Description: 1970. Hardcover. Autograph album. Oblong 12mo. Red leather album with "Autographs" in gilt on front board and blank pages. Each of the pages has been careful and artistically folded (as issued?), when a page was used it was unfolded. Ownership signature of Kira Vivian, daughter of Civil Rights pioneer C.T. Vivian, Blackstone Ranger, Freedom Rider, and one of the chief lieutenants of Dr. King during the Civil Rights Struggle. Inscribed by Kira Vivian to herself on the front fly, in girlish fashion. Leaves are creased where they've been unfolded, else condition overall is fine. Most of the signatures are directly on the pages of the album, a few inscriptions are tipped or laid in.Interspersed with a few autographs of the young teenage Kira's school friends are the Inscriptions and Autographs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, John Lewis, Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, Fanny Lou Hamer, Charles Billups, and James Bevel (Director of Direct Action and Director of Nonviolent Education of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Director of the Selma Movement). A visceral artifact of the struggle for Civil Rights, compiled at a time when the outcome was by no means assured. It would be difficult to capture the immediacy of the Movement so completely in a single object. Bookseller Inventory # 396289

Item Description: [Japan, 1934. Book Condition: Fine. Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Presented to Lou Gehrig from the Children of Japan. Gehrig barnstormed around Japan in 1934, joined by Babe Ruth, his manager Connie Mack and a dozen other players. Gehrig brought his wife Eleanor, intending the trip to be the first leg of their delayed honeymoon. Gehrig and Ruth were no longer on speaking terms, and an encounter between Eleanor and Ruth involving prodigious amounts of champagne and caviar in the slugger's cabin further cemented the estrangement. The present letter, written in Japanese and presented to Gehrig from "the children of Japan," is a touching note offering good wishes to Gehrig's mother, with whom he was very close.Translation of the presentation letter:Dear Mr. Gehrig: "I am very happy to learn that you are a good filial son to your Mom. I hear that fact from someone and read about it in a magazine. I like and respect my own Mother very much. So, I would like to give something from Japan to your Mom. I was thinking and thinking, but I could not know what was a good and appropriate gift. After much consideration and thought, I decided it might be good to send your Mom the Nippon Shichi Fukujin or Japan's Seven Lucky Gods. It is close to Christmas - your country. So these Seven Lucky Gods will bring many happinesses to your Mom. This is really a 'tsumaranai mono,' not-so-fine a thing, a trifling thing of no major importance whatsoever. I wish some Japanese person in the US to explain to you about the Seven Lucky Gods. I hope you and your Mom will have a good fortune. I ask the Seven Lucky Gods to bring this gift to you. I am afraid the gift for your Mom is not so fine. Japanese children said to you, Mr. Gehrig, 'yoroshiku' to say 'hello' to you and your Mom. For a long time you have been active and working hard. Please come to Japan again. With your Mom! To have sightseeing. The children of Japan. November."[With:] 3 books on Japanese culture and tourism from Gehrig's library. From the collection of Ruth Martin Quick, a former girlfriend of Gehrig who later became a very close friend of Gehrig's mother, Christina. The collection included Gehrig's jersey worn on the 1934 Japan trip (which sold for over $500,000 at auction in 2011), a signed baseball, and other memorabilia. Provenance: Jeffrey Quick of Whippany, N.J., son of Ruth Martin Quick, a friend of Lou Gehrig Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Bookseller Inventory # 300422

Item Description: nd [circa 1940], Los Angeles, CA, 1940. Original Print in Archival Box. Book Condition: Very Good. First Printing (presumed). Two small pinholes in the margin, soft cracks in the image (age), else bright and clean. Quarterbound, green leather spine with raised bands, portfolio with acetate window protecting the photo. 4to. np. Illus. (b/w plate). Arguably the first "celebrity upskirt" shot. Miranda was dancing with Caeser Romero when, according to legend, a photographer at Ciro's Restaurant laid on the floor trying to capture a more unusual shot. As it happened, Miranda was fond of not wearing underwear, apparently because it gave her 'greater freedom of movement' while dancing. The image was quite scandalous in its day. The included playbill is signed by all performers, including Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. Bookseller Inventory # 8403

Item Description: Berlin, Germany: Editions Braus, 1986. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 150 pages. Published in 1986. Retrospective collection of photographs on subject. One of the most beautiful photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. Published simultaneously with the Softcover in a tiny print run (of about 25 copies) as a hardcover original. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Joel D. Levinson and Editions Braus: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with metallic-silver titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Joel D. Levinson. Essays by Lou Stoumen and Helmut Gernsheim in the English original and felicitous German and French translations. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Berlin, Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents, in its rare Hardcover Edition format, Joel D. Levinson's "Flea Markets". His ground-breaking sequence of photographs of California flea markets, taken in the 1970's and 1980's. "A microcosm of American society: Unique individuals from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, who all shared in an unusual atmosphere of mutual cooperation, appreciation, interest, and respect. A body of work where the relationships of people to each other and to objects 'for sale' uniquely symbolize the continual recycling of American consumer culture. Subtle yet possessing a jarring formal beauty and resolve" (Publisher's blurb). It is easy to underestimate the significance - and beauty - of Levinson's photographs. But in our age of eBay, the "live" flea market (that is, the physical, real one) has been completely taken over by "online sales", giving these wonderful images of a bygone era a sweetly nostalgic glow (even if this was never Levinson's intention in the first place). And yet, the relationships and interactions between Buyer and Seller - transactional, emotional, erotic - that happen every single day online are, in effect, the "virtual-reality" extension of the face-to-face encounters that the flea market made not just possible but indispensable: Just as the flea market enabled interactions between people who might never otherwise have met, so does eBay. Still, as this book poignantly reminds us, there is NO substitute for the face-to-face encounter. The inherently impersonal character of online transactions not only takes some getting used to, it is deeply unsettling and alienating (without us even being aware of the fact). As Robert Frank and now Levinson, among many other photographer-elegists show, photography is all about what we have irretrievably lost or are about to lose. An absolute "must-have" title for Joel D. Levinson collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "For David C. Ruttenberg, With deep gratitude, Joel D. Levinson". The recipient, who died in 2003 at the age of 93, is the legendary Chicago-based financier/businessman who amassed a real estate fortune. He was also a major philanthropist and collector, who supported many young and aspiring artists (like Levinson). This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: ALL other copies available online are the Softcover Edition. A tiny number of the Hardcover Edition was specially produced by Editions Braus, all of them now in private hands or public collections. A rare signed copy thus. 60 photographic plates. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 3921524334. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 20665
