About this Item: Paris: J. Povolozky & cie. 1922, 1922. Erstausgabe, OBrosch., Softcover, [92] Seiten, Frontispizporträt, 4° (26 x 33 cm), ungeschnitten, Nummer 51 der ersten hundert Exemplare auf "fil Lafuma", Widmung auf dem fliegenden Blatt: "A Monsieur Josef Hajny Hommage de l'éditeur", Umschlag mit leichten Verlusten eingerissen, angeschmutzt, vergilbt, vom Buchblock gerissen; Bindung gelockert, Seiten innen am Rand vergilbt, insgesamt guter Zustand. "The book was published by Jacques Povolovsky, a book dealer and art gallerist in Paris, following a solo exhibition by Kupka in his bookshop/gallery in 1921. It contains some of the finest vintage abstractions and particularly the cycle of black-and-white works which made their debut then, as well as an exposition and discussion by Arnould-Gremilly of Kupka's theories of art and perception and the question of spirit or transcendence against the forces of blind materialism. Kupka's response to the predicament of the contemporary spirit was 'orpheism', at once a challenge to the then-current hegemony of cubism - asserted on the book's opening page to be in decline, not to say decay - and a bold sui generis mode of abstraction that bears comparison with the strains pioneered by Kandinsky or Delauney."
