Bookseller Inventory # 185632

Item Description: A Paris: Chez l'Auteur et Bonneville, 1802., 1802. First edition of an uncommon book by the author and publisher, Louis Dubroca (b. 1757), who was a prominent apologist for the Revolution and for the Napoleonic Regime. The book is a series of anecdotes, arranged according to the quality of moral excellence ("Amour conjugal," "PiŽtŽ filiale," "Tendress fraternelle," etc.), the common theme being the moderating influence of women upon men. Twelvemo. xiii, [1], 324, 8 (publisher's catalogue) pp. Engraved frontispiece Contemporary half calf over paste-paper boards, gilt-ruled spine with red morocco label. Front board worn in places, binding extremities a bit rubbed. Contemporary armorial bookplate. A very good, clean copy. Bookseller Inventory # 15870

Item Description: Paris, Dubroca, 1802. Small octavo. Pp. xii, 420. Small tear to title-page repaired on verso. Extensive notations on half-title in neat contemporary hand, dated 1826 and 1830, with few words shaved off at outer margin. Hardcover, bound in near contemporary half calf and marbled boards, nice orange morocco lettering-piece to spine, spine-ends tolled in black, corner-tips bit chafed. A lovely copy in a very good general condition, fine interior. ~ First edition thus. New, considerably revised and enlarged edition. The work first appeared in a concise form in 1781, in issue 147 of Journal de Paris. It immediately received a considerable attention and was translated into English. The identity of the original author remains debatable, but is mostly attributed to d'Anglesy. Publisher and bookseller Louis Dubroca was responsible for the revision and enlargement of the work, and consequently to its reissue in the present, practically complete different form. Extremely rare. Bookseller Inventory # 9999_00272

Bookseller Inventory # 192614

Item Description: Juan López Cancelada en la oficina de Mariano de Zuniga y Ontiveros, Mexico City, 1806. Quarto (20.5 x 14.8 cm), pp [4], 1-10, 1-18, [2], 19-106, with frontispiece and nine engraved plates. The plates are by Jose Simon de Larrea and Manuel Lopez Lopez, and consist of portraits of the leaders of this famous slave revolt, and some scenes of the atrocities committed. The rebellion against French rule in Haiti (St. Domingue) is painted in the worst light, part of the French propaganda about this revolt, but the facts were indeed grim. Jean-Jacques Dessalines fought alongside L'Ouverture for Haiti’s freedom, became the first emperor of the new nation: his bloodthirsty ways were notorious even in his time. The engravers depict their subjects as virtual caricatures of themselves, with overly large lips and noses and bulging eyes and engaging in brutal atrocities, while the whites are shone in the most humane forms. The plates are unique to this edition and appear nowhere else and have a nightmarish quality. (Emperor Maximilian owned a copy of this book.) Dubroca, the author, wrote an equally disparaging life of Toussaint L'Ouverture. The publisher, Juan López Cancelada, was a Spanish-born emigrant who became a well-known polemicist and political agitator in Mexico: he may well have published this book as a warning about what could happen in Mexico with its huge "caste" population. Binding is contemporary full Mexican tree calf, with leather spine label, spine gilt, marbled endpapers, sprinkled edges. The final leaf of text has some old repairs. Very good copy. First Mexican edition and first with the plates. Bookseller Inventory # 7234

Item Description: en la oficina de Mariano de Zuniga y Ontiveros, Mexico, 1806. Book Condition: Near Fine. First Mexican edition. Small quarto. Frontispiece and nine plates engraved by Jose Ambrosi Carraro, three of which have handsome and vivid contemporary hand coloring. Contemporary marbled calf with spine gilt. Lightly rubbed boards and older private bookplate and stamps, near fine. The most important edition of this Afro-Mexicanum illustrated book. Published originally in France in 1804, then translated into Spanish and published in Spain in 1805, this title tells of the revolution in Haiti, the personalities of the leaders of the revolution, and stresses the mob violence, excesses, and atrocities. The portraits of the leaders include Dessalines, Toussaint L'Ouverture, Christobal, and Biasou, as well as depicting graphic scenes of decapitation, dismembered bodies, dead babies, and executions. Dubroca was hired by the Bonaparte regime to conduct a propaganda war against Toussaint L'Ouverture, the leader of the slave revolt at Santa Domingue, and this work is a similar vilification of his successor, Dessalines. Exhibition of Slavery and Justice, Selected Sources from the John Carter Brown Library, number 22 (describing this edition). A beautiful copy of an interesting book. Bookseller Inventory # 280454
