Item Description: R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company, Chicago, 1956. Hardcover. Demy octavo, [17.5/7inches], full gilt-embossed Oxford-blue cloth, pp. lvi, 257, indexed. Illustrated with a frontis map of the Creek Country in Milford's Time . Number 54 of the Lakeside Classics. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . Jean-Antoine Le Clerc, also known as Louis Milford, (1752 - 1817/1820), was a French military officer and adventurer who led Creek Indian warriors during the American Revolutionary War as allies of the British. He emigrated to the British Colonies in North America in 1775. Beginning in 1776, he lived with the Creek Indians of the Upper Towns for about 20 years in frontier territory of present-day Alabama. He was befriended by the chief Alexander McGillivray, who used him as his war chief in battles. Later, after his return to Paris, Milfort joined the French Sacred Society of Sophisians. Commissioned a general in the army, he was forced into retirement with a pension. He published Mémoires, ou coup-d'oeil rapide sur mes voyages en Louisiane, et mon séjour dans la nation Creeke (Paris: De l'Imprimerie de Giguet et Michaud, 1802). In his account, he described his travels, hoping to stimulate French interest in the lands of the Creek and Southeast Indians. In his 2007 book, the scholar Darius Alexander Spieth noted that Milfort used a ghostwriter for his memoirs. This is the English translation published by Lakeside Classics. In exceptionally good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 25910

Item Description: R. R. Donnelley & Sons, Chicago, 1956. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. Light edgewear to extremities. Clean, tight, bright. 257 pp with sources consulted and index. This dignified and well designed Lakeside Press Classics series was started in 1903. Every 25 years the cover material is changed, type style and production methods are adjusted and updated to keep pace with current developments in fine book making. Although no longer used, older volumes show the publisher's distintive gold oval debossed "pressmark" - an Indian Chief's profile. Gilt top edges on all volumes with gilt lettering lightly debossesd to spines of navy-blue, cloth-covered boards. List of Lakeside Classics to rear of each volume. These books were not sold but given away to employees and select recipients as holiday gifts. Translated by Geraldine De Courcy. Milford's Memoirs "has provided us with a tale that reflects an intimate knowledge of the Indians, their way of life and their manner of carrying on warfare as well as their relations with the English, American, French and Spaniards who were competing for the trade with the natives over whose territory they were trying to gain control," (Publisher's preface).
