Rebound in marbled boards with leather corners and hinging, leather-look spine glued to brown paper spine; 302 pp. With historical and biographical illustrations by the translator. This original gem contains: "A narrative of the journey of Louis XVI, and his family to Varennes," by Madame Royale, Duchess of Angouleme; "A narrative of the journey to Bruxelles and Coblentz in 1791," by Monsieur, now Louis XVIII; and "Private memoirs of what passed in the temple, from the imprisonment of the Royal family to the death of the dauphin," by Madame Royale, Duchess of Angouleme. VG-, name inside ffep. Spine and cover edges show some wear. Foxing on first pages through title page and last few, otherwise pages very bright for a book this old. Exlibris. Item Description: London: John Murray, 1823. 8vo., 302 + (2)pp., including an errata slip, a half-title and final leaf (blank recto, imprint verso), engraved frontispiece of the Tuilleries, title a little foxed, largely in inner margin, else a very good copy in original boards, uncut, sympathetically rebacked. First edition. The translator was John Wilson Croker (1780-1857), the politician and writer, whose political and literary talents, however, never quite achieved the top flight.
