T.e.g. Floral end papers. First Edition of "A Whisper in the Dark." First Edition with attribution to Alcott of "A Modern Mephistopheles" (originally published in "No Name Series" in 1877). One of Louisa May Alcott's Sensation Novels, also a reflection of her interest in Goethe, especially Faust (Journals of LMA, p. 60n). It first appeared anonymously in Roberts' "No Name Series" for which the readers were to guess the name of the author. The next edition, published together with the First Edition of "A Whisper in the Dark," had the author attribution. Stern quotes Alcott (LMA. From Blood & Thunder to Hearth & Home, p. 192): "I think my natural ambition is for the lurid style. I indulge in gorgeous fancies and wish that I dared inscribe them upon my pages and set them before the public." Unknown to many but for Stern's work, she did. Paged as: [Front free endpaper], [front flyleaf clipped out, i.e. stub present], [half-title leaf], [frontispiece leaf with tissue guard], [title/copyright leaf], [dedication/blank], [table of contents/blank], 1-2, [blank/verso plate], 3-178, [blank/verso plate], 179-260, [recto plate signed H. Wolf/blank], 261-305, [blank], [6 pages of publisher's illustrated advertisements for "Louisa M. Alcott's Famous Books"], [rear flyleaf], [rear free endpaper]. Hardcover; H 17cm x L 11cm. Blue cloth rubbed, front board decorated with flower design against a black rectangle and bright gilt stamped lettering, spine decorated with bright gilt stamped decoration and lettering. Spine cocked with ends frayed, cloth chipped at spine heel with quires fractionally exposed, long 12cm tear ascending from heel of front joint leaving front board rather tenuously attached, 4.5cm tear at heel of rear joint, cloth worn along front and rear board fore-edges as well as at corners. Some splitting evident along hinges. Aforementioned front fly clipped out with stub present; half-title page has past owner's four-line ink inscription regarding book purchase in September 1880 in Eaton, Ohio; strong moisture stain at top of frontis with ever successive fading inclusive to page 60 or so with intermittent faint stains at top edges of other leaves again with increasing severity from page 280 or so through the rear pastedown; pages 92-93 toned from a now removed newspaper clipping; pages 115-118 slightly nicked along fore-edges; some occasional light soiling and mild toning and/or foxing to interior leaves as well. Several quires pulled associated with cocked spine. Alcott's tale of Ben Brown and his performing poodle Sancho who run away from the circus. Printer's imprint of "Cambridge: Press of John Wilson & Son" [Cambridge, Massachusetts] provided at foot of copyright page. BIBLIOGRAPHY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE by Jacob Blanck notes two issue points occurring at the author's list of books upon the title page where either LITTLE MEN is {1} not followed by a closing quotation mark (i.e. "Little Men) as well as {2} "Little Men,' with a closing single quotation mark.
