About this Item: Office, Chief of Air Defense Artillery, Ft. Bliss, TX, 1995. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 132 pages. A scholarly study blending historical examples with the analysis of evolving Air Defense Doctrine. Foreword by Major General John H. Little, Chief of Air Defense Artillery. From Foreword: 'Lieutenant Colonel Frank Caravella provides both the student of history and the student air defender the linkage between the past and present. He develops the historical linkage from two perspectives: first, by showing through historical examples the importance of the vertical dimension of the battlefield and, second, by giving a glimpse of earlier battlefields as seen by AAA soldiers. In the development of the importance of the vertical dimension of the battlefield and its importance on doctrine, Lieutenant Colonel Caravella starts with an example showing the effect of height, speed and visibility with the forces involved in ground combat. He then extrapolates these fundamentals forward in time, showing the comparisons with early aircraft. The fundamentals are similar; the difference is the envelope of action. When combatants break friction with the ground, the limits of altitude, speed and maneuver are greatly expanded. This isn't a sterile account of the evolution of air defense doctrine, but a historical accounting flavored with the color and realism of the soldiers who fought it. It includes the heroics of individual soldiers, the bravery and the individual skills of AAA soldiers, and the camaraderie and cohesion of AAA units that have largely gone unreported'. Contents: The Third Dimension, Corregidor and The 60th Coast Artillery (Anti-Aircraft), AAA and The Battle of The Bulge, 93rd AAA Gun Battalion at Ie Shima, Air Defense in The Yom Kippur War, Modern Air Defense Artillery and The Gulf War, The Changing Air Threat, Future Air Defense Artillery Operations, Air Defense Trends.
