About this Item: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co./Dutton, London/New York, 1929. Green Cloth. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG-. A.J.E.Terzi (illustrator). 'New' based on 17th. col.f/piece+xx+377+plates V & VI, 3 further col.plates by Terzi, 31 text figs. Terzi's 4 col.plates replace Lubbock's original ills. sm.1943-dated inscrip. top corner fr.pastedown, otherwise an excellent copy being internally clean, tight &unmarked in bright, clean, unworn covers; unclipped jacket quite clean but some fading and edge-rubbing/nicking. Lubbock's most popularly successful work, first issued in 1882 in the International Scientific Series and going through 17 editions, the later of these being quite common. This, apparently now scarce, edition however is in effect a new work since p.249 onwards contains Myers full annotations in the light of subsequent work by Wheeler, von Frisch etc. His intro. on Lubbock is a little patronising in tone. I think this is about the only Lubbock work which was re-issued after the Great War. Size: 14.5 Cm x 22 Cm. Seller Inventory # 005586

About this Item: Condition: New. Cambridge University Press, 2012. 662p. Paperback. Series: Cambridge Library Collection - Philosophy. The philosopher and critic George Henry Lewes (1817?78) published this work in two volumes in 1845?6. This is a reissue of an 1892 printing, which brought the volumes into one book. Lewes wrote widely on literature, science and philosophy, and was also the long-term intimate companion of George Eliot. This book is a narrative history, rather than an encyclopedia, of key philosophers. It is, therefore, a partial and personal study instead of an exhaustive textbook. The first volume concentrates solely on Greek philosophy, beginning with the Pre-Socratics and ending with the Neo-Platonists. The second volume jumps to Francis Bacon, concentrating on British, German and French philosophy, and addressing, among others, Spinoza, Locke, Hume and Kant, and ending with Auguste Comte. Containing both historical anecdotes and pithy analyses of ideas, this book reflects the expertise and intellectual sympathies of a Victorian polymath. (Publisher's information). Condition: New Print on Demand. Printed on Demand. Seller Inventory # 46607
