Georges de Brébeuf (1618 – 1661) was a French poet and translator best known for his verse translation of Lucan’s Pharsalia which was warmly received by Pierre Corneille, but which was ridiculed by Nicolas Boileau in his Art poétique. We find only one other example of this same 1657 book for sale anywhere else worldwide! Compare at nearly $2,900! This first illustrated Brebeuf edition is extremely desirable and is often considered the best translation of this famous work. The illustrations in this book include a medallion portrait of Lucan, a lovely frontispiece, and 10 other engravings by Francois Chauveau.
