About this Item: Heinemann, [1964], 1964. 8vo., Second Edition; original green cloth, backstrip lettered in silver, a very good, bright, clean copy in similar dustwrapper, the latter lightly age-soiled (rather more so on rear panel), mildly sunned at backstrip and with mark on front panel. This edition was produced under Heinemann's 'Contemporary Fiction' label for members of the Readers Union group of book clubs. It was an optional selection rather than an automatic mailing and accordingly only a limited number seems to have been issued. Other than the first edition of the previous year this is the only printing under Plath's pen-name of 'Victoria Lucas' adopted by her as protection against her mother's reaction to an unsympathetic portrayal. Rare, especially in this condition. Seller Inventory # 15279

About this Item: Heinemann. Hardcover. Condition: Good. B0000EEV3X 2nd edition from William Heinemann, London, 1964. Hardcover with Good Dust Jacket under mylar. Minor blemishes on DJ, as well as minor rubbing and bumping to corners and edges of book and DJ. General wear is not out of the ordinary, and this specimen is a solid copy of a book which proves to be increasingly hard to find. ~Good. Light to moderate shelf wear to covers/corners; satisfaction guaranteed. The Bell Jar is American writer and poet Sylvia Plath's only novel, originally published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" in 1963. The novel is semi-autobiographical, with the names of places and people changed. The book is often regarded as a roman à clef since the protagonist's descent into mental illness parallels Plath's own experiences with what may have been clinical depression. Plath committed suicide a month after its first UK publication. The novel was published under Plath's name for the first time in 1967 and was not published in the United States until 1971, pursuant to the wishes of Plath's mother and her husband Ted Hughes. The novel has been translated into nearly a dozen languages.
