About this Item: Boston: L.C. Page, and Company, 1926. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Withington, Elizabeth R. (illustrator). Later printing (originally published February 1908) of the first book in the author's Avonlea series. Illustrated by Elizabeth R. Withington. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Second edition from / new plates, made in 1925: / the old plates of the original / edition in 1908, being worn / out. With new illustrations. / L. M. Montgomery Macdonald / April / 1926 / [cat illustration]". Bound in the publisher's ribbed light teal cloth, with gilt lettering to the front board and spine, illustration of a woman's profile to the front board, publisher's advertisements at the rear of the text. A very good copy, with wear and light rubbing to the extremities, bright spine, spine cracked between the half-title and the frontispiece, otherwise intact spine, small piece of tape to the rear pastedown. Additionally inscribed with a former owner's provenance note to the front pastedown: "This book, autographed by the / author, was presented in 1948 to / Sister Mary Kathleen, then superintendent / of nurses, St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, / by the author's son, Dr. Stuart / Macdonald, member of the / Staff of Obstetrics and Gynaecology [sic] / St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Canada. / To Franie / Affectionately / Aunt Amy / Dec. 13, 1977". Overall, a clean and attractive copy with strong provenance. The only signed Anne of Green Gables we have seen. After inscribing the book, the author bequeathed this copy to her son, Dr. Stuart Macdonald, who presented this volume to the nursing superintendent at the Toronto hospital where he worked. In turn, the nurse gave this copy to "Aunt Amy," who chronicled the book's ownership history in her inscription. Aunt Amy gifted this book, and additionally inscribed it, to Franie. Franie passed the book down to the step-mother of the most recent owner. The personal nature of this volume's provenance emphasizes the rareness of a signed copy of this title. The author's inscription relates to Elizabeth Withington's eight illustrated plates, including one frontispiece. The earliest editions of Anne of Green Gables contain illustrations by W. A. J. and M. A. Claus. All three artists were painters working with a variety of mediums, meaning their works had to be copied by printers for mass reproduction. By 1925, the printer's plates of Claus' work had been used to the point that they were no longer producing clear images. Rather than making new plates from the original Claus illustrations, Withington created new original illustrations for the subsequent printings. Although the choice of illustrator was likely made by the publisher, Montgomery's inscription, which is accompanied with a small cat silhouette illustration, implies she was rather fond of Withington's artwork. Anne of Green Gables is a story about a young orphan girl, Anne Shirley, who is sent to live on a farm on Prince Edward Island with a family who had intended to adopt a boy. Montgomery drew much of the novel's setting from her own childhood experiences living with her grandparents on the eastern coast of the island. Like her readers, the author was quite taken with the jovial character she had created and wrote multiple sequels to this first installment of what would become a beloved children's series. Inscribed by Author. Seller Inventory # LMMAGG002

About this Item: Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1914. Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 429 pages, plus 8 pages of ads at rear. Thirty Eighth Impression; May, 1914. A remarkable survival of this exceedingly scarce 1914 jacket that has done great service to the boards. Considerable chipping to jacket; now protected in removeable brodart archival sleeve. Apart from the chipping the jacket is whole and in one piece with no splitting at flaps. The verso of jacket [now loosely covered by the blank white of brodart backing] lists many titles for sale "more than 400" but no L.M. Montgomery volumes. This is not a later-issue jacket: check the G&D publication dates for the "Recent Issues" on rear. Presumed first Grosset edition. The boards, spine, and paper insert on front are in superb condition. Foxing (brown spots from acidic reaction to jacket flaps and pictorial plates) is present on the frontispiece and first 2 leaves, on the rear endpaper, and on the leaves immediately adjacent to the 3 pictorial plates. Small marginal stain at lower right of pages 111-130, 159, and a small brown dot from fore-edge from page 257-263. In fact, a very clean interior. Front blank endpaper is lacking. Former owners' name to half title in ink, and (hidden by jacket flap) in pencil to front pastedown. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # Books006557

About this Item: Toronto, ON: McClelland & Stewart ( M&S ), 1934, 1st Edition, First Printing, Toronto, Ontario, 1934. Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine (see description). Dust Jacket Condition: Good (see description). Text Cover (illustrator). First Edition. -----------hardcover, red cloth, a Near Fine copy, in a lovely Good/Very Good text design dustjacket with some shallow chipping and a few closed tears, a wee bit of age toning to the spine of the jacket (and I do mean wee), a sticker has been placed over the price on the front flap but careful examination with abright light reveals a 1.50 price tag, incredibly rare in any dustjacket, this is the variant jacket (with text only) of the more often seen pictorial dustjacket edition, no priority has been established but all dustjacketed copies are rare, ---the pictorial dustjacketed copies are in a reddish-orange cloth and are slightly taller than this variant issue, ----as per the Lucy Maud Montgomery bibliography by Frank and Juanita Lechowick this copy is in maroon cloth (I'd call it red but who am I to quibble), as well this has the ruled line on the copyright page, red stain to upper edge of text block as called for, 19.6 cm tall (versus 20.9 cm on the red-orange issue) ---no priority established between the two issues but it is difficult to imagine McClelland and Stewart producing this with a pictorial dustjacket for the first "run" and then finding demand high and issuing it with a text jacket, it SEEMS much more likely that unexpected demand for the book with the text dustjacket would lead M&S to issue further copies with a more visually appealing pictorial dj ---and of course, if the pictorial jacket had been used on the first production run why change it all?, a very scarce book but especially so in dustjacket, the Lechowick bibliography states that there is one recorded copy of this title in this text design dustjacket ---now two copies are known but I guess there are other copies out there burrowed away in some little hidey-hole, -----contents include: The Maid of France: Joan of Arc; The Angel of the Crimea: Florence Nightingale; The Great White Ma: Mary Slessor of Calabar; A Brave Deed: Laura Secord; Happiness in a Log Cabin: Catharine Parr Traill; A Noble Girl Queen: Queen Victoria; Courage in Danger: Madeleine De Vercheres; From Darkness to Light: Helen Keller; A Friend of the School: Ada May Courtice; The Golden Chrysanthemum: Caroline MacDonald; A Loyal Pioneer of the West: Elizabeth Louise Mair; Caring for Indians: Anna J Gaudin; A War Heroine: Edith Cavell; Braving the White North: Sadie Stringer; Canada's Queen of Song: Madame Albani; The Princess of the Paddle: ( Tekakionwake ) E Pauline Johnson; A Leader in Education: Aletta Elise Marty; A Pupil at School: Dr Margaret MacKellar; A Daughter of the Empire: Margaret Polson Murray; Service for Others: Lady Tilley; Champion of Dumb Animals: Marshall Saunders, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo.
