Item Description: Providence, 1833. No binding. Book Condition: Poor. First edition. Softcover. When Sarah Cornell was found hanging from the frame of a haystack in Tiverton, Rhode Island on December 20, 1832, it might easily have been called suicide but for a note she had left in her bandbox saying, "If I should be missing, enquire of the Rev. Mr. Avery, of Bristol, - he will know where I am." This was the beginning of the Reverend's troubles and one of the most famous 19th-century cases. Aside from the note, the most damning piece of evidence against the Reverend was his presence in the vicinity of the hanging and his not too credible story of his wanderings about the countryside on a cold December day. Despite this, the magistrates dismissed the case against him. Sarah, however, had been five months pregnant, and it was popularly assumed that Avery was the cause of her troubles and thus had a good motive for murdering her. The people became very threatening, and Avery unwisely decided to disappear. There was an immediate hue and cry and he was traced to Rindge, New Hampshire, where he was found and brought back to face a trial for murder. For the times, the trial was a long one; it lasted 27 days, during which 196 witnesses were examined, and resulted in Avery's acquittal. It is not inconsistent to say that while the verdict was undoubtedly sound on the evidence as presented, there is still enough doubt to make the case an interesting one for conjecture. This Report is Rev. Avery's Examination before John Howe and Levi Haile, Justices of the Peace, and commenced on Monday, December 24th until Sunday, January 6th, 1833, where he was acquitted. Disbound. Only goes up to p.58 - lacks pp.59-64 which included an Appendix (p.61-p.64). Sewn, 20cm. Extremely fragile with some loss to tp, all edges frayed and torn. Poor at best (Macdade : 43). During the Revolutionary War, he responded to the Lexington Alarm, and later joined Colonel Jonathan Ward's regiment to fight at Bunker Hill. Drury and his men served in different areas during the war, from as far away as West Point, New York, to closer to home in Grafton, where his company guarded military stores. This list reflects the latter mission, With 17 men signing as part of the company to guard the town, and three men on the"Committee & Selectmen." Three individuals (Asaph and John Sherman, and Benjamin Goddard) served on both. The year 1777 began with a victory at Princeton, New Jersey just a few days after Washington defeated Hessian mercenaries at Trenton. Washington then went into winter quarters at Morristown, New Jersey, and there was little activity until the summer campaign season commenced. Not knowing what the future would bring, Drury's company was determined to hold the town, along with its supplies, should British forces return to Massachusetts after evacuating Boston the previous year. The move would prove unnecessary; most of the fighting would occur in New York, Connecticut, and points south for the remainder of the war. After the war, Drury became deeply involved in Shays' Rebellion, a 1786-1787 tax revolt led by farmers in western Massachusetts. The uprising was quashed, and Drury imprisoned as "a person dangerous to the state." He was eventually released on good behavior. Drury remained active in state and local politics, serving terms as constable, deputy sheriff, tax collector, assessor, selectman, and state legislator.ConditionGood. Lower left quadrant re-attached. Most of lower right quadrant was lacking but most likely blank and now expertly infilled. Some text missing on verso. Manuscript Document Signed. Bookseller Inventory # 20993.13

Item Description: West Point, NY, 1781. No binding. Book Condition: Very Good. Manuscript Document Signed as Lieutenant Colonel and Commandant. West Point, N.Y., November 15, 1781. 1 p., 12¼ x 15¾ in. Historical BackgroundColonel Luke Drury's regiment was in charge of guarding the garrison at West Point, a critical point in the navigation of the Hudson River, after Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia. This weekly return by Colonel Drury shows in detail the number of his men stationed at West Point. This return is from less than a month after the siege of Yorktown, the last major battle of the American Revolution. West Point was an area of strategic importance throughout the war as the Americans feared the Hudson River would be used by the British to separate New England from the rest of the colonies. The report mentions Drury's troops attending to many duties, including that 31 were on "Constant Fatigue at Gallows Hollow," 16 on "Constitution Island," 9 "Repairing Hut at New Windsor & Diging wells" 7 "Artifices Constantly Employed in Garison," 4 "in the Sloop," 3 "on Forrage Guard," 7 "Making Shingles," 16 "In the Boats Service," 3 "Station Guard East Side of the River," 4 "at Robersons Farm," 5 "chain fatigue" (i.e., the chain across the river from Constitution Island to West Point), and 14 "Constant Fatigue at the Generals." Apparently the form was filled in and signed by "J. Brown L.t Act as Adg,t" and signed off by Drury.ConditionVery good. Manuscript Document Signed. Bookseller Inventory # 20639.08
