It arose, on 10 Jun. 1834, at the Old Down inn, out of a meeting of the Protestant Reformation Society, at which the two principal speakers were the Rev. John Lyons and the Rev. Edward Tottenham. A friend of Brown?s having formally challenged those gentlemen to a disputation, six meetings were soon afterwards arranged to take place in the college chapel at Downside. These meetings came off in 1834, and in 1836 appeared the ?Authentic Report' -DNB. Seller Inventory # 206268

About this Item: John Murray, 1828. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 Volumes: viii+323 pages; iv+304+[i ad] pages with glossary. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5") in original paper covered boards and spine title labels as originally issued. From the library of Professor George M Foster. (Sabin:42852; Hill page 186) 1st edition. G F Lyon was an English traveler, born in Chichester, England, in 1795; died at sea in October, 1832. He entered the British naval service in 1809, was present at the attack on Algiers by Lord Exmouth in 1816, and in 1818 was commissioned to accompany Joseph Ritchie on his tour of exploration into central Africa. Ritchie died in Fezzan, and Lyon returned to England, after encountering many dangers and privations, which he described in his Narrative of Travels in Northern Africa (London, 1821). In 1821, in command of the Hecla, he accompanied Captain William E. Parry on his arctic expedition, publishing on his return The Private Journal of Captain G. F. Lyon (1824). In 1824 he sailed in command of the Griper' with the mission of exploring Melville peninsula, and following its western shore as far as Turn-again, he found, after three months' searching, a passage through the group of islets called Southampton island, but was unable to enter Repulse bay through Sir Thomas Rowe's Welcome. On 13 September, a violent tempest compelled him to return to England. The story of the voyage was told in A Brief Narrative of an Unsuccessful Attempt (1825). He subsequently passed several years in Mexico, and died on his return from a second visit to America. His remaining works are The SketchBook of Captain G. F. Lyon during Eighteen Months' Residence in Mexico, No. 1 (London, 1827), and Journal of a Residence and Tour in Mexico in 1828 (London, 1828). George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in. Condition: Spines renewed with original chipped spine labels laid on, front end papers chipped and damaged at edges, corners bumped and rubbed, Foster's stamp on end papers, old owner's signature on covers, internally near fine else over all very good. About this Item: 1824. London, Murray, 1824. 8vo. Contemporary English half calf gilt over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-piece in one, others decorated in gilt and blind, marbled endpapers, speckled edges; pp. [iii]-xiii, [1 (directions for placing the plates)], 468; engraved frontispiece by Edward Finden after Lyon, 6 engraved plates by Finden after Lyon, one engraved folding map by J. Walker, printed music in the text; apart from light brownig and occasional spotting to plates, as usual, a good copy. First edition. Lyon accompanied the second Parry expedition in search of a North West Passage as captain of Hecla (1821-1823; Parry commanded the sistership Fury), and his Private Journal of the voyage supplemented Parry's official account of the voyage, Journal of a Second Voyage for the Discovery of a North-West Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific (London: 1824). The expedition proved of importance for the successful cooperation between the Europeans and the Inuit encountered; indeed, by the aid of a sketch map of the area Parry discovered from one Iligliuk a possible route for the Passage. Lyon's curiosity led him to observe with great attention the habits and character traits of the different tribes of Esquimaux and the Private Journal offers an excellent description of this people, as Field states: 'Almost the entire volume is devoted to the narration of the peculiarities of the Aborigines of the Arctic regions. Captain Lyon's curiosity led him to observe with great attention, the habits of life, and traits of character of the different tribes of Esquimaux, which his humanity, and good management attracted to his winter quarters. They built their villages near his ships, and permitted a closer familiarity, than any other of the Arctic voyagers was able to attain. His narrative, therefore, abounds with incidents of their intercourse, and curious anecdotes of Esquimaux life'. This work is known with two settings of the preliminary leaves; in one there is no half-title, the printer's name appears on the verso of the title, and the preliminary matter is paginated to xi, followed by an unnumbered page with the 'Directions .' and in the other (as here) the imprint is on the verso of the half-title (that of the title is blank) and the pagination runs to xiii, followed by an unnumbered page of 'Directions .'. - There are variants with different compositions of preliminaries; a half-title does not seem to have been issued. Arctic Bibliography 10531; Brunet III, col. 1254; Chavanne 1442; Hill I, p. 186; Lowndes p. 1422; Sabin 42853; Staton and Tremaine 1289; cf.: Field 961 (London: 1825 ed.). Seller Inventory # 2081717
